Controls Engineer - Siemens
Position OverviewHenshaw is seeking a Controls Engineer with strong experience in Siemens automation platforms to lead controls design, programming, and commissioning of custom automation systems. This role is responsible for executing controls deliverables from concept through installation, ensuring systems meet customer specifications, timelines, and quality standards. You will work closely with mechanical engineering, manufacturing, robotics, and field teams to deliver turnkey automation solutions including conveyors, robotic cells, and material handling systems.Key ResponsibilitiesProject ExecutionLead controls scope for assigned automation projects from kickoff through runoff and installationDevelop and maintain project timelines, milestones, and deliverables for controls activitiesInterface directly with customers (Ford, GM, Stellantis, etc.) for design reviews and approvalsSupport FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing) and SAT (Site Acceptance Testing)Controls Design & ProgrammingDevelop PLC programs using Siemens TIA Portal (Step 7 / WinCC)Configure and program Siemens PLCsDesign and develop user HMI interfacesDevelop electrical I/O lists, network architecture, and device layoutsIntegrate safety systems using Siemens safety PLCs (F-series)System IntegrationIntegrate robots (Fanuc, ABB, KUKA) with Siemens PLC platformsInterface with vision systems (Keyence, Cognex, Apera)Configure industrial networks (Profinet, Ethernet/IP gateways where required)Commission servo systems, VFDs, and motion control devicesDebug & CommissioningLead machine debug both in-house and at customer facilitiesTroubleshoot electrical and controls issues in real-timeSupport field installation, startup, and production ramp-upOptimize cycle time, reliability, and system performance Required Qualifications3+ years of controls engineering experience in industrial automationSiemens PLC programming / Hardware DesignTIA Portal / Step 7 / WinCCIndustrial networking (Profinet preferred)Experience commissioning automation systems on plant floorsAbility to read electrical schematics and mechanical drawingsPreferred QualificationsExperience in automotive manufacturing environments (Ford PTME standards a plus)Allen Bradley exposureFamiliarity with safety standards (ISO, ANSI, NFPA)Servo motion systemsVision integrationMulti-robot cell coordinationPrior project leadership or customer-facing experienceKey CompetenciesStrong problem-solving and troubleshooting skillsAbility to manage multiple projects and deadlinesExcellent communication with cross-functional teams and customersHands-on mindset with willingness to travel (~15%)What We OfferCompetitive salaryHealth, dental, and vision insurance401(k) with company matchOpportunities for advancementExposure to cutting-edge automation and robotics systemsTypical Projects at HenshawConveyor and indexing systems (e.g., rack indexing, lift/rotate stations)Robotic material handling cellsVision-guided pick-and-place systemsCustom assembly and manufacturing automation
