- Since its founding in 1895, the Department has systematically built clinical, research, and educational programs that have become deeply integrated into the fabric of Penn Medicine, the University, and the community.
- Today, Penn Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is consistently among the nation's top recipients of funding for biomedical research from the National Institutes of Health and leads the way for the practice of diagnostic medicine by integrating research, education, and patient care in ways that embrace the emergence of precision diagnostics, deep phenotyping, and informatics as central themes in healthcare and biomedical research.
- Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is closely aligned with the Penn Center for Precision Medicine and Center for Personalized Diagnostics, as well as has collaborative relationships with the Center for Cellular Immunotherapies, Institute for Immunology, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, in addition to key partnerships with the departments of Emergency Medicine, Microbiology and Radiology.
- Major hospital sites for clinical and educational activities include the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, Pennsylvania Hospital, the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and the Crescenz VA Medical Center, all institutions of great distinction and diversity.
- The Department is a member of the Clinical Practices of the University of Pennsylvania (CPUP) and the Chair serves as a member of the Board of Directors of CPUP whose primary role is to coordinate the tripartite mission of Penn Medicine's 18 clinical departments.
