1-10About the RoleThe Company is seeking a Senior Counsel for Family Justice and Policy to lead its legal and policy advocacy efforts in the District of Columbia. The successful candidate will be at the forefront of the organization's mission to end family separation and expand parent defense capacity. This pivotal role requires a deep understanding of family and child welfare law, as well as a strong commitment to systemic transformation. The Senior Counsel will be responsible for shaping legislation, engaging with the D.C. Council, and working closely with a range of stakeholders to advance policies that promote family preservation and the right to high-quality parent representation. Key responsibilities include leading policy and systems advocacy, conducting legal research, providing support to family defense attorneys, and mentoring staff in the pursuit of community-centered advocacy.Applicants must have a J.D. from an accredited law school, active membership in the D.C. Bar, and at least 7 years of legal experience, with a focus on family defense, child welfare, or related family law practice. The role demands excellent legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills, as well as a proven ability to mentor and supervise legal staff. Strong interpersonal and coalition-building skills are essential, particularly in the context of collaborating with impacted communities. The ideal candidate will have experience with the D.C. family regulation system and a background in legislative or policy advocacy, with a preference for those who have worked within parent defense offices or family advocacy coalitions. A commitment to racial and economic justice, as well as fluency in a language other than English, is a plus.Travel Percent
