The successful candidate will be at the forefront of the organization's mission to end family separation and expand parent defense capacity. This pivotal role requires a deep understanding of family and child welfare law, as well as a strong commitment to systemic transformation. The Senior Counsel will be responsible for shaping legislation, engaging with the D.C. Council, and working closely with a range of stakeholders to advance policies that promote family preservation and the right to high-quality parent representation. Key responsibilities include leading policy and systems advocacy, conducting legal research, providing support to family defense attorneys, and mentoring staff in the pursuit of community-centered advocacy.Applicants must have a J.D. from an accredited law school, active membership in the D.C. Bar, and at least 7 years of legal experience, with a focus on family defense, child welfare, or related family law practice. The role demands excellent legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills, as well as a proven ability to mentor and supervise legal staff. Strong interpersonal and coalition-building skills are essential, particularly in the context of collaborating with impacted communities. The ideal candidate will have experience with the D.C. family regulation system and a background in legislative or policy advocacy, with a preference for those who have worked within parent defense offices or family advocacy coalitions.
