Sulfuric Operator

Sulfuric Operator The Sulfuric Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient processing of chemical products, namely Spent Acid Regeneration process, Sulfur Contact plant, Oleum, and Sodium Bisulfite. The Operator must frequently adjust processes to operate at optimum levels using objective information. The position also requires responding effectively in emergency situations, mechanical knowledge, mathematical reasoning skills, instrument knowledge, computer skills, and an understanding of many different tools and devices used on the job.Essential Skills/Responsibilities:Safely operate the processes listed above in a manner that will prevent accidents and environmental upsets and in a manner that will promote a high finished product quality that meets customer demands. Follow all established OSHA PSM Guidelines and documented procedures.Adhere to all policies, guidelines and standards.Understand Responsible Care and RMP requirements for Sulfuric Process.Report and participate in incident investigations and mitigation to prevent recurrence.Report and participate in near miss investigation and mitigation to strive for Beyond Zero.Complete all applicable training on time.Direct involvement in job safety analyses.Respond to alarms and unsafe conditions.Complete or assist in completing Life Critical Permits as needed: JSA, LOTO, Line Breaking, etc.Wear appropriate PPE for task at hand and conduct responsibilities in a safe mannerSpecific Job Responsibilities:Excellent safety behavior24 Hour HAZWOPER certificationRespirator Fit TestParticipate in training for handling Hazardous Materials, Plant Safety Procedures, Proper Use of PPE, Process Safety Management & the Process Safety Code, Responsible Care, Site Security, forklift safety, respiratory protection, and other training classes as applicable.Adjust process to maintain optimum operating conditions or within established limits in the Converters, Towers, Furnace and other equipment.Follow standard operating procedures without reference to manualIsolate equipment for maintenance through lockout/tagout practicesTroubleshoot processes when problems arise or to prevent problems from arisingUnderstand and anticipate the dynamics of changes in the processRespond to power and equipment failuresIdentify and submit maintenance work requests.Perform specific cleaning or repair tasksMaintain open communication with co-workers and supervisors regarding activities in the plant. Review plant status and shift activities with relief operator at end of shift.Conduct rounds to observe process values and inspect equipmentRecord storage tank levels and divert product flows or adjust process to fulfill operating instructions or prevent overfilling a tankPerform condition monitoring and preventive maintenance to keep plant equipment in good working order and identify equipment malfunctions if/when they occur.Perform inspections of safety devices and equipmentAid Powerhouse Engineer as neededPerform housekeeping, sweeping, cleaning, and painting as necessary to maintain proper plant appearance.Help out with maintenance projects during shutdowns and turnaroundsCoordinate with the Laboratory for sampling, analysis and recordkeeping.Notify supervision of problems that require attentionAct as site manager during non-business hoursRecord information on the log sheet(s) regarding activities or events during the shiftOther work as directed by supervisorSpecific Job Requirements:Operator training reviewed by supervisor, follow training recommendations from supervisor on training progressAbility to read and follow written instructions.Basic computer skillsDemonstration of common sense.Capacity to memorize and recall procedures quickly and accurately.Disposed to avoid unnecessary risks.Proficiency in basic written communication skills.Ability to manage multiple tasks.Comprehension of basic mechanics.Capacity to take charge and make decisions based on facts.Willingness to change priorities immediately.Efficiency in climbing stairs repeated and capacity to work under extreme hot/cold conditions or near moving equipment.Ability to lift 50 pounds.Physically able to handle the challenges of the work floor (operate a forklift, climbing stairs, able to wear respirator, etc.)Ability to work effectively with competing prioritiesGood verbal and written communication skillsSelf-starter able to work alone and in groupsGood time management skills and work ethicBe available for emergency work.Must be able to work in a rotating shift and must be available for overtime.Benefits:Unionized EmploymentPay Starting at $38.64 / Hour with step up after probationary periodPension PlanHealth, Dental, Vision InsuranceLife InsurancePaid Vacation BenefitsQuarterly Safety BonusRegular Overtime Opportunities
