Chemical Engineer Co-op

General Purpose:Contributes to the development of new products, new processes, and optimizes process conditions to maximize material efficiencies. Completes process hazard assessments, equipment setup and operation, production run documentation, staff training, process scale-up, supply chain management, quality assurance, hazardous material shipments and new technology development.Essential Functions:Responsibilities that are requirements in order to perform the job:Participates on customer facing projectsPlans and conducts experiments to demonstrate new conceptsProvides direction to Engineering Aides and laboratory staff to complete assigned tasksPrepares and plans laboratory scale process development activitiesContributes to the design & implementation capital projectsPrepares plans and documentation to produce new materials, including operating procedures, engineering drawings, raw material and equipment specifications, batch data sheets, process safety reviews, chemical hazard assessments, and quality assurance proceduresRecords experimental work accurately and maintains up-to-date recordsTransitions laboratory scale processes to kilo lab scaleContributes to project status reports/presentations as appropriateProactively seeks advice from internal/external resources for technical approaches and safe work practicesDevelops an area of expertise for which peers seek guidanceAnalyzes data and applies statistical methodsStays up to date with new and emerging chemical processing techniquesDemonstrates creativity in solving challenging problemsDemonstrates commitment, dependability and respect with regular attendance and punctualitySupportive Functions:In addition to performance of the essential functions, this position may be required to perform a combination of supportive functions based on business needs:Assists with maintaining process equipmentProvides formal training for operating staffParticipates in safety program activities and presentationsMaintains awareness of how the position supports the Quality Management System, and participates in quality related activities such as audits and quality improvement teams as necessaryEnsures that chemical inventories are well maintainedConducts physical inventory checks for materials and equipmentKnowledge, Skills & Abilities:The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation:Proficiency in MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPointProficiency in Minitab or equivalent statistical analysis softwareMotivated and results orientedGood written and verbal communication skillsGood attention to detail and keen observation skillsGood interpersonal skillsAbility to maintain thorough, accurate recordsGood chemical process equipment design and operational knowledgeAbility to multi-taskAction-orientedEducation/Experience Guidelines:Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or related field or equivalent experience0-3 years of related experienceExperience with chemical reactions, distillation, separation and purification methods, batch and continuous processing
