Senior Engineers serve as technical authorities on complex infrastructure projects, overseeing all phases of design and delivery while mentoring junior staff and ensuring high-quality outcomes across BART's transit network.The Electrical Division is responsible for the complete electrical design and calculations of the following systems: power distribution layouts and varying topologies, cathodic protection (sacrificial/impressed current CP systems, CP power supplies), UT/Resistivity/Anode testing, stray current analysis, fire alarm systems, emergency lighting, lighting control systems, emergency power supply and energy storage systems (Uninterruptible Power Supplies) (UPS)), lighting inverters, standby/emergency generators, and central battery systems.Beyond the minimum qualifications, the ideal candidate brings a minimum of three years of full-time professional electrical engineering experience in both field and office settings, along with demonstrated ability to prepare equipment specifications and procurement contracts, and a working knowledge of current code requirements and industry practices.Senior Engineers exercise lead supervision over BART and contracted staff, lead multi-discipline project teams, and coordinate across engineering disciplines to drive high-quality design outcomes. Responsibilities span design integration, QA/QC, and the development of project scopes, schedules, and cost estimates.The most qualified candidates for this position will have highly developed competencies in the following areas, which will be reinforced with related work experience and will be clearly articulated during the selection process:Electrical engineering expertise - strong foundational and applied skills across BART's infrastructure systems.Problem-solving ability - analytical thinking to diagnose complex technical challenges and identify practical solutions.Communication skills - able to deliver clear presentations, produce concise technical reports, and explain complex issues to BART management and executive leadership.Multidisciplinary collaboration - comfortable leading and working across engineering disciplines and stakeholder groups.Full project lifecycle experience - spanning scoping, budgeting, requirements analysis, conceptual engineering, detailed design, implementation planning, and installation coordination.CPM scheduling familiarity - understanding of Critical Path Method scheduling as applied to capital infrastructure programs.Maintenance knowledge - familiarity with different strategies for electrical equipment maintenance in a transit environment.Systems breadth - understanding of electrical, mechanical, physical, and mathematical principles as applied to BART's traction power, train control, ventilation, HVAC, and other support systems, along with a genuine interest in emerging developments in these fields.This role requires flexibility beyond standard office hours. The position includes participation in a rotational on-call schedule (24 hours a day, shared with colleagues on a 7-day rotation), with occasional overnight and weekend maintenance windows. This requirement does not apply to current full-time District employees unless the position requires additional evaluations or clearances.Examples of DutiesPerforms complex engineering design or construction project duties; as assigned, may serve as Resident Engineer on construction projects; may direct contract resident engineers on assigned project.Establishes schedules and methods for providing contract administration services; inspects and verifies quantities of materials, and monitors adherence to specifications; identifies resources needed.Monitors progress of engineering design or construction projects; makes recommendations on resources to be allocated.Assists in the development of policies and procedures; monitors work activities to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures; makes recommendations for changes and improvements to existing standards and procedures.Recommends and assists in the implementation of goals and objectives; implements approved policies and procedures.Recommends approval of and submits contractor's progress payment applications; maintains documentation of contract deficiencies.Prepares engineering designs, specifications, costs and quantity estimates for engineering projects; reviews the adequacy and accuracy of computations.Administers control of required documentation for contracts; prepares a variety of reports and correspondence on engineering design or construction matters including Inspector's Daily Reports, monthly and final completion reports, contract modifications and negotiations, field and design engineering changes, and correspondence with the contractor on contractual obligations.Initiates and evaluates design and field engineering changes during construction; makes field measurements of completed items of work; inspects construction at substantial and final completion states.As assigned, participates in the selection of engineering staff; provides or coordinates staff training; works with employees to correct deficiencies; implements discipline procedures.Participates in the preparation and administration of the program budget; submits budget recommendations; monitors expenditures.Prepares analytical and statistical reports on operations and activities.Attends and participates in professional group meetings; stays abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of engineering design and construction.Minimum QualificationsEducation:Possession of a Bachelor's degree in engineering or a closely related field from an accredited college of university.Experience:Three (3) years of (full-time equivalent) verifiable experience in engineering project administration.Other Requirements:Must possess a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.Substitution:Additional professional experience as outlined above may be substituted for the education on a year-for year basis.
