Legal Assistant

A mission-driven legal initiative is seeking a Part-Time Paralegal to support its litigation and client intake efforts within a growing nonprofit focused on reproductive justice. This role blends traditional paralegal responsibilities with operational and administrative support, working closely with a small, high-impact legal team. Role: Part-Time Paralegal Location: Remote – Maplewood, NJ (must be within ~30 minutes for ocassional travel to Maplewood)Hours: Part-time (10–20 hours per week)Compensation: $25–30/hour (commensurate with experience)Key ResponsibilitiesLitigation & Legal SupportAssist attorneys with case preparation, file organization, and record maintenancePrepare, format, and file legal documents in state and federal courts (electronic and physical)Support discovery processes, including document collection, review, and organizationDraft and track requests for medical records (including HIPAA releases and affidavits)Conduct basic legal and factual research and review court filing requirementsPrepare basic filings such as pro hac vice motionsDocument Management & Client IntakeManage intake and organization of client records and materialsCollect, scan, and upload physical documents into document management systemsHandle sensitive legal materials, including pickup from local P.O. boxMaintain accurate digital and physical filing systems with strict confidentialityOperations & Administrative SupportTrack case deadlines, calendars, and court schedulesCoordinate meetings, filings, and case-related logisticsSupport internal workflows across legal and program teamsAssist with administrative tasks including travel coordination, expense tracking, and basic IT troubleshootingMaintain tracking systems for cases, clients, and documentationIdeal Background1–3 years of experience in a paralegal, legal assistant, or similar roleStrong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detailAbility to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environmentExcellent written and verbal communication skillsProficiency in Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and document management systemsExperience handling confidential and sensitive information with discretionMust be located within ~30 minutes of Maplewood, NJ and able to support in-person document handlingPreferred:Experience in a law firm, litigation setting, or nonprofit legal organizationFamiliarity with court filing systems (state and/or federal)Exposure to medical records, personal injury, or civil rights workInterest in reproductive justice or impact litigation
