Construction Controller

A well-established heavy civil construction company in the Greater NYC area is seeking an experienced Controller to join its Accounting team. With over 25 years of successful operations, the firm has delivered some of the region’s most important infrastructure projects, including sewer, water mains, roadwork, and site work. This is a full-time, mid-senior level role with strong growth potential.Key Responsibilities:The Controller will be responsible for ensuring the integrity of financial statements and compliance with GAAP while leading the monthly close process and producing timely, accurate compiled financial statements. They will coordinate and co-lead internal and external audits (financial, insurance, unions, and agencies), taking corrective actions to improve audit outcomes and strengthen financial practices. The role also includes oversight of tax preparation and filing, including IFTA, HUTA, sales tax, and quarterly payroll tax returns, ensuring all filings are accurate and submitted by required deadlines.In addition, the Controller will be expected to implement cost-reduction strategies and provide financial recommendations that support business objectives, while also guiding overall financial strategy. They will supervise and develop the finance team, driving efficiency, productivity, and professional growth, and will foster an environment that encourages retention and career development. The position requires identifying and implementing process improvements to streamline workflows and enhance efficiency, as well as delivering timely and accurate reports, analyzing financial data, and providing actionable insights to leadership.Qualifications:Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related fieldCPA or advanced certification preferred5–7 years of progressive accounting/finance experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership roleStrong knowledge of GAAP, tax compliance, and financial reportingExperience managing audits and implementing financial controlsProficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Vista Viewpoint softwareExcellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skillsDetail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlinesSkills & Abilities:Strong leadership, team development, and resource management skillsAbility to analyze complex financial data and provide clear, strategic recommendationsInitiative, sound judgment, and professionalism in all financial mattersExcellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbalProven ability to implement cost-saving initiatives and streamline processesHigh integrity and confidentiality in handling sensitive financial information
