Library Aide
Job Description Summary
SUMMARY: Under general supervision performs clerical and technical library services in support of the daily operations of the City’s library.
Job Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions; as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act; may include any of the following representative duties; knowledge; and skills. Factors such as regular attendance at the job are not routinely listed in job descriptions; but are an essential function. Essential duties and responsibilities may include; but are not limited to; the following:
• Works the front desk; provides customer assistance and guidance to patrons; responds to questions; assists patrons in locating books or other materials; answers incoming phone calls.
Checks books in and out for patrons.
Accepts requests for library cards.
Takes money from patrons for the payment of fines.
Assists patrons in sign-up for the use of the library’s personal computers.
Contacts patrons regarding book reserves.
Performs shelving of books; and DVDs.
Assists the Librarian in cataloging books and movies.
Researches obituaries for patrons; data enters cemetery records into an automated database.
Participates in story time activities for children.
Prepares damaged books for repair.
Notarizes documents.
Maintains supplies at the front desk.
Serves as a backup for flag duty.
Supports the relationship between the City of Plainview and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens; visitors; and City staff; performs other duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School diploma or equivalent; AND one year of experience in basic library operations; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:
May require a valid Texas Driver’s License.
May require notary public.

Work is performed in a standard office environment. May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Knowledge:
City policies and procedures.
Library policies procedures and methods.
Library resources.
Library system cataloging.
Information database systems.
Customer service principles and practices.
Skill in:
Time management and multi-tasking.
Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with library patrons.
Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
Using a personal computer and various software applications.
