Central Plant Supervisor – All Campuses (Tempe Location) Arizona State University Campus: Tempe JR118790 End Date: June 19, 2026 Apply before 11:59 PM Arizona time the day before the posted End Date. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and five (5) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field including two (2) years managerial experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Job Profile Summary: Provides guidance for the intermediate to complex operations of a facility or unit based on established policies and procedures. Job Description: Facilities Management, Central Plant, seeks a Central Plant Supervisor for the Tempe campus to supervise the installations, repair, overhaul, and maintenance of high and low pressure heating systems, cooling systems, and power plants. Essential Duties: Supervise staff through daily interactions, goal setting, and performance assessment activities to ensure individual and departmental-level goals and objectives are being achieved Plan and develop, assign and adjust work methods and procedures to meet schedules using knowledge of capacities, and capabilities of personnel and equipment. Inspect work in process to ensure its completion within allotted time limits and for acceptable quality standards. Train employees in new methods or procedures and remains alert for opportunities to effectively decrease costs. Prepare estimates of proposed job costs to ensure the most effective utilization of personnel and equipment. Develop, implement, and measure operational/process improvement actions to ensure optimal departmental performance and capital expense management. Prepare sketches of proposed work and assist in the design and specifications of planned jobs or contracts. Maintain records and files, including the approval of time cards and absences, in order to document compliance with operating policies and procedures covering resources and staff. Assist in the preparation of capital and operations budgets as part of the Annual Budget Process to ensure designated area of responsibility has the appropriate resources to meet and exceed stated goals and objectives. Assess requisitions and maintain appropriate levels of equipment and materials (repair or replacement parts) in order to ensure operations are uninterrupted under any foreseeable situation. May maintain, operate and/or repair central plant equipment in emergency situations; plant operations are 24/7 facility. May be required to work shifts as necessary to ensure 24/7 coverage. Coordinate with suppliers, contractors, engineers, and others concerning equipment operations or maintenance. Assist Central Plant Supervisor and temporarily assume duties when absent. Use ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions. DAYS AND SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday 7:00am – 4:00pm and will need to be available to direct activities as required for night and weekend and emergency response including nights, weekends, and holidays. This position is based at ASU’s Tempe campus and will require working from other campuses depending on operational needs. Salary Range: $82,000 - $85,000 per year commensurate of experience and education. ASU offers a comprehensive benefits package with the State of Arizona. Desired Qualifications: Experience in: supervising (3 years) operating a campus chill water distribution system servicing three or more buildings (2 years) operating and maintaining a one ton or larger centrifugal chillers (2 years) water chemistry on cooling towers, steam plant systems, and chill water distribution systems RO/DI production facility operation and maintenance plant digital control system’s operation and maintenance; including temperature, pressure, level, flow sensors, automated valves, and variable speed drives Evidence of: effective communication skills Working Environment: Work in a noisy environment, varying temperatures and confined spaces. Bend, lift and carry objects above shoulder up to 50 pounds (e.g. valves, actuators, small pumps, pipes, ladders, manhole covers, cooling tower fill panels, resin medial cylinders, electrical starters, electrical motors, etc.). Work off ladders to open/close valves, change lamps, repair boilers and chillers, and test safety alarms. Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. Occasional bending, reaching, lifting above shoulder. Pushing and pulling up to 100 pounds. Occasional exposure to dirt, dust, extreme temperatures and inclement weather. Occasionally required to stand; walk and climb or balance; sit and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. Drive University vehicle/cart. May be exposed to hazardous and dangerous materials, tools, and equipment which will require safety precautions and/or specific process to be followed, and may include the use of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) (e.g. safety glasses, hearing protection, negative pressure and positive pressure respirator). This position is based at ASU’s Tempe campus and will require working from other campuses depending on operational needs. Must possess EPA/CFC refrigerant certification and EPA 608 Universal certification, or be able to obtain within six months of employment. Must pass pre-employment physical examination post offer of employment to include audiogram, asbestos worker clearance, respiratory clearance questionnaire and respiratory fit test. Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license (minimum of Class D) upon employment and maintain throughout employment. Post-offer of employment, selected candidate must possess an acceptable driving record which is 5 or fewer points in the most recent 39 month period from date of hire. This position requires working a rotating on-call/stand-by schedule and may be called in for emergency response including nights, weekends, and holidays.
