State Government Reporter
The Statesman Journal/statesmanjournal.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is hiring a state government accountability/watchdog reporter in Salem, Oregon.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience managing a beat, developing sources, accessing public records, analyzing data, and telling compelling, reader-focused stories through the voices of those impacted and the communities state government programs are intended to serve.
This reporter will primarily cover the executive branch and state agencies. You also will help cover the Oregon Legislature when it is in session, augmenting daily coverage with enterprise work that also focuses on how Oregonians would be affected.
This reporter must embrace our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and be relentless about including diverse voices in our storytelling. Video skills are a plus.
Located in the Willamette Valley, Salem is Oregon’s state capital. The Statesman Journal covers Marion and Polk counties in the Mid-Willamette Valley. The Statesman Journal is one hour from Portland, 90 minutes from the Oregon Coast, and amazing outdoor experiences are even closer.
Responsibilities:
Creates storytelling that accurately informs, entertains, and engages specific audiences and platforms using metrics.
Works toward becoming the community's leading voice in the area of expertise.
Connects with the community through storytelling and outreach including social media
Provides thoughtful analysis of complex issues.
Works with the editor to evaluate metrics, what's working and what's not, and to develop ongoing plans to meet audience needs.
Collaborates with colleagues to ensure all elements for story packages, including photos, videos, and graphics, are provided. Captures basic pictures and videos as needed.
Promotes personal brand, the brands of colleagues, and the institutional brand.
Provides great customer service, helping readers find answers and solutions.
Performs other duties as necessary.
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in communication, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
At least three years of daily journalism experience in a digitally focused newsroom.
Ability to write clear, compelling articles that engage our audience and to enhance your work with video and other digital storytelling tools as appropriate.
Understanding of social media and its uses.
Understanding of metrics and ability to adapt based on feedback from data.
Ability to multi-task and excel under deadline pressure, using time efficiently in a 24-hour newsroom.
Skill at collaborating in a cross-functional environment and adapting to a rapidly changing industry.
This position may include some evening and weekend work.
This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
