Assistant Controller – Government ContractingLocation: McLean, VA (Hybrid)Compensation: 150,000-175,000 + bonusComprehensive benefitsPosition OverviewWe are seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to join a large and growing government contractor and oversee critical general ledger accounting operations. This position will play a key leadership role in managing the monthly and quarterly close process, maintaining compliance with government contracting regulations, supporting audits, and driving process improvements across the accounting function.The ideal candidate will bring strong accounting management experience within a complex government contracting environment, with deep knowledge of DCAA regulations, indirect rate structures, SOX compliance, and Costpoint ERP systems. This individual will partner closely with finance leadership and cross-functional teams to ensure accurate financial reporting, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance.Key ResponsibilitiesOversee day-to-day general ledger accounting operations and supervise accounting staffManage and coordinate the monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial close processesEnsure timely and accurate preparation of financial statements and supporting schedulesReview journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and variance analysesSupport annual financial statement audits and coordinate audit requests with external auditorsMaintain compliance with DCAA regulations, FAR/CAS requirements, and internal government contracting policiesAssist with SOX compliance efforts, including documentation, testing, and remediation of internal controlsOversee indirect cost allocations, rate calculations, and related accounting activitiesPartner with FP&A, contracts, and operations teams to ensure accurate project and cost accountingLead accounting systems enhancements, integrations, automation initiatives, and process improvement effortsSupport ERP administration and optimization efforts within Deltek CostpointDevelop and implement accounting policies, procedures, and best practicesProvide mentorship, training, and leadership to members of the accounting teamAssist senior finance leadership with strategic initiatives and special projects as neededQualificationsBachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field7-10 years of progressive accounting experience within the government contracting industryPrior accounting management or supervisory experience requiredStrong knowledge of government contracting regulations including DCAA, FAR, and CASExperience managing indirect rate structures and indirect accounting methodologiesHands-on experience supporting SOX compliance and internal controlsStrong understanding of U.S. GAAP and corporate accounting practicesExperience with Deltek Costpoint requiredExperience supporting ERP implementations, integrations, or system enhancements preferredCPA certification strongly preferredStrong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skillsExcellent communication skills with the ability to interact across all levels of the organization
