I.GENERAL SUMMARYAssist Nurse Manager with daily operations of the unit by providing employee supervision, quality improvement activities, and immediate follow-up to patient, physician and employee issues.Practices within the scope of the Illinois Nurse Practice Act to ensure the delivery of comprehensive, high quality, individualized nursing care, based upon knowledge, experience and critical thinking skills.Demonstrate the mission, values and philosophy of Insight Chicago Hospital and Medical Center.II.DESCRIPTIONDuties and Responsibilities30%* Exercises independent judgment and leadership on daily operations of the unit and advises the Nurse Manager.* Serves as a clinical, educational and supervisory resource to the nursing staff.30%Manages the appropriate utilization of unit resources (i.e. supplies and labor).Performs direct nursing care for assigned patients when indicated (see Job Description for Staff Nurse).Conducts nursing and patient rounds on the unit several times a day.Confers with physicians, as needed, to clarify medical orders and direct care.Serves as a liaison with staff in nursing, medical staff, social work, therapy, nutritional services, pharmacy, etc. to coordinate care.Foster an environment of cultural excellence in order to maintain patient satisfaction.20%Monitors Quality Assessment and Quality Improvement on a monthly basis to ensure appropriate patient care on the unit.Assists unit staff with patient discharges. Provides patients and family members with discharge information regarding medications, follow-up, etc.Ensures the enculturation and implementation of the National Patient Safety Goals and Core Measures as required by regulatory certifying bodies.Manages and resolves unit conflict and executes service recovery principles.Collaborates with Nurse Manager/House Manager to investigate, advise, and when appropriate, execute disciplinary action in accordance with the IHMC policies and procedures.15%Makes ongoing assessment of staff performance and providing individual/team feedback.Prepares staff performance evaluations in collaboration with the Nurse Manager.Participates in hospital/unit committee/council activities.Ensures professional development of self through participation in seminars, certifications, professional affiliations and educational programs to keep abreast of latest trends in their area of expertise.Independently or in collaborations with the Nurse Educator, collects, complies, and reviews staff development activities for each employee. Completes individual follow-up to ensure that the employee meets requirement in the areas of age specific and unit-based competencies..Additional Duties and Responsibilities5%Adheres to downtime procedures.Adheres to established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.Performs both essential and non-essential job functions in a safe manner as identified by IHMC.Demonstrates an understanding of and models the mission and core values of IHMC through behavior and attitude.Enhances professional growth and development by accessing educational programs, job related literature, in-service meetings, and workshops/seminars.Performs other related duties as assigned.Functions as interim Nurse Manager as needed.Provides direct patient care on the unit as needed.JOB SPECIFICATIONSREQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIESKnowledge:Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required.Current RN License in the State of Illinois required.Completion of NIH Stroke Scale Training Course within one (1) year of hire in Intensive Care, Telemetry, Stroke Unit, ED required.Skills:Current CPR certification requiredACLS certification preferred, required for critical care and ERAbilities:Ability to quickly recognize changes in condition and needs of patients.Knowledge of patients' growth and development needs.Ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy in carrying out work duties.Disclaimer:The statements herein are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by employees and are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of functions, tasks, duties, responsibilities and requirements of employees so classified.
