SUMMARY

This position will be located within the County of Los Angeles, Department of Health Services, Community Programs Unit. The Public Information and Communications, Staff Analyst position will handle internal and external communications, media relations, crisis communications and Board relations for several high-profile programs. The Community Programs Unit includes Housing for Health, Office of Diversion and Reentry, My Health LA and other community programs. The position will handle frequent media requests and strategically communicate the impact of the work being done to help some of the most vulnerable patients across Los Angeles County.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Media relations: Manages press inquiries related to any and all of the programs within the Community Programs Unit. Promotes the work of the unit through building relationships with reporters and editors and pitching stories to media, including local and national organizations. Develops media strategy and works with the Department’s central communications team to highlight the work of the unit, to align messaging with the department and to handle crisis communications. Tracks and monitors media coverage of the unit’s programs and work. Produces materials, including press releases and press
External communications: Manages external communications through newsletters, website content, social media posts and video content. Researches programs, gathers patient stories and shares news and activities through various channels. Works with community-based organizations, other County agencies and philanthropic organizations to conduct external communications on behalf of the program. Helps formulate responses on Public Records Act
Internal communications: Leads communications with staff within the Community Programs Unit, promoting key activities and accomplishments. Ensures staff within the unit are informed of the Department’s strategic priorities and important developments. Collaborates with hospital public information officers and the Health Services Director of Communications on department-wide communications initiatives.
Board relations: Provide strategic leadership and guidance on responses to requests and motions from the Board of Supervisors, in collaboration with the Director of Government Relations & Policy. Facilitates the timely response to requests for information.
Training: Provides training, guidance and resources to staff in talking to reporters and responding to media requests. Prepares talking points for staff and managers when speaking to the
MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience   A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Communications, Journalism, Public Administration, Public Relations, English or a closely-related
Four years of experience initiating, planning, developing, maintaining, evaluating, implementing, and coordinating media relations and public information or four years professional experience as a journalist within a media
Certificates/Licenses/Clearances    A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential
Successful clearance of a Live Scan process with the County of Los Angeles.
OTHER SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES    Strong written and oral communications skills
Ability to use communications principles, methods, practices, and techniques to engage local media and to convey information to the public through various media and social media channels and platforms
Knowledge of computer software, including all Microsoft Office programs
Interpersonal skills to work in a highly collaborative
Ability to interact with diverse communities and constituents of diverse backgrounds
