Duties Description The Deputy Commissioner for the Office of Health Equity and Human Rights (OHEHR), reporting directly to the NYS Commissioner of Health, serves as a member of the executive leadership team, partnering with NYSDOH senior leadership to enhance, develop and integrate the key equity strategies of the Department both internally and externally. The Office for Health Equity and Human Rights leads the Department’s commitment and strategy to be a diverse, anti-racist, equitable, and inclusive organization. The OHEHR is responsible for setting and implementing an overarching vision and framework of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) at the leadership, programmatic and administrative levels. The OHEHR works to eliminate systemic organizational marginalization and promotes inclusion, anti-racist practices, and equity principles evidenced through policy, programming, and personnel recruitment. Essential Duties And Responsibilities The OHEHR defines the overarching vision, framework, and strategy to achieve a diverse, equitable, and inclusive Department across all Centers, Divisions and Offices. <ul><li> Engage in priority planning rooted in research, evidence-based best practices, and internal and external input.</li><li> Ensure the Department’s priorities are reflective of and inspired by health equity principles with the intent of eliminating health disparities.</li><li> Develop performance indicators through analysis and shared observations regarding programmatic practice and innovation, internal and external diversity, equity and inclusion metrics, and organizational culture and practice.</li><li> Collaborate with external stakeholders and subject matter experts to provide recommendation and evaluation of NYSDOH’s practices.</li><li> Identify and use key resources to stay current on DEI research and evidence-based best practices in developing policy, program, and recruitment.</li><li> Address emerging issues and work with designated NYSDOH staff to identify, document and address disparities and access barriers to prevention services, diagnosis, treatment, hospitalization, and deaths. </li></ul>The OHEHR directly facilitates health equity and DEI focused committees' representative of state agencies, DOH staff members and community stakeholders; works closely with all programmatic areas, as well Senior Staff, to ensure that organizational culture, practice, and leadership development are clearly reflected in the Department’s vision for diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Deputy Commissioner works in partnership with the Associate Commissioner for OMH-HDP and the OMH-HDP team. As part of New York State’s first-in-the-nation gun violence disaster emergency, the OGVP works to identify and bring together key partners in the community and law enforcement to identify steps that can be taken to curb gun violence in New York State. The OGVP coordinates efforts and directs resources to existing and emerging gun violence hot spots throughout the state. The OGVP collaborates with the Executive Chamber, Division of Criminal Justice Services, and other state agencies to establish an all-of-government approach.
