- Under general supervision, reports to Building Official.
- Performs site inspections of construction work, buildings, drainage erosion control inspection, and related systems for compliance with approved plans and with applicable codes; approves construction work during progressive stages of construction through site visits and inspections of footing, framing, gas systems, plumbing systems, electrical systems, mechanical systems, and final inspections.
- Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of laws/regulations pertaining to building codes and inspection activities, and of changes in municipal codes or ordinances; reads professional literature; maintains building inspection certification and/or other professional affiliations; attends classes, workshops, and training sessions as appropriate
- Must have certification from the State of Tennessee (Fire Prevention Division) as a Building Inspector, Mechanical Inspector, and Plumbing Inspector or the ability to obtain these certifications within one year of appointment.
- Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of construction and building techniques and code enforcement; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.
