Individuals working as Patient Care Assistants at Loyola University Medical Center prior to 1997 are exempt from the above guidelines and are grandfathered into the Patient Care Tech roles upon successful completion of an in-house orientation and training program for the Patient Care Tech position.

Care Companion/Sitter/Observer : In this role, the PCT may be asked by the RN or LPN to remain with a patient as a means to keep the patient safe. Procedures and Treatments : In this role, the PCT will accurately complete and document patient care activities including: ADL, vital signs, weights, (actual weight on admission or as ordered), intake & output, and calorie counts according to policy and procedure.

Department Specific Tasks : In this role, the PCT will support the nursing team by indirect patient care activities such as restocking equipment/linens, cleaning equipment etc. In this role, the PCT will provide basic care by assisting patients with personal care needs including bathing, grooming, oral care, eating, feeding, use of bedpan or urinal, positioning, answering and responding to patient call lights, bed making, etc.

Performs a variety of direct patient care procedures to assist the unit manager, professional staff and physicians in providing patient care focused on the needs of the patient.

TECHNICAL CARE - Assists with completion of patient testing and treatment procedures, sets up and primes IV tubing, 12-lead ECG, simple tracheostomy suctioning and care, changes dressings, performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation, obtains wound and throat cultures.

Participate in other activities which are essential to the functioning of the patient care unit. 5 South Searle is a 35-bed acute medical telemetry unit specializing in general medicine, oncology, hospice and palliative care.

Assist other health care members in providing patient specific detailed education regarding adequacy measures where appropriate - Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), and regarding disease process/access.

Assists in training of applicable direct patient care staff on appropriate programs under the supervision of a nurse. Monitors processes in the delivery of patient care through regular Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities.

Performs designated technical tasks and procedures in accordance with written procedures and protocols, ie blood draws, EKGs, respiratory, tub care, etc. Provides age-appropriate physical care to promote and maintain good hygiene, skin integrity and patient comfort, ie bathing, skin care, oral hygiene, elimination needs.
