Job Title: District Registered Nurse (RN) Exemption Status/Test: Exempt/ProfessionalReports to: Head District Registered Nurse/ Superintendent Date Revised: 2/2026Dept./School: Health Services/District WidePrimary Purpose:Under the direction of the Head District Registered Nurse, the District Registered Nurse (RN) assists in the coordination and implementation of the district's health services program. The RN provides clinical expertise, supports campus nursing staff, assists with regulatory compliance, and contributes to the development of procedures that promote student health, safety, and academic success.Qualifications:Education/Certification:Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education programValid registered nurse license (RN) from the Texas Board of NursingCurrent automatic external defibrillator (AED) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificatesSpecial Knowledge/Skills:Knowledge of Texas school health laws and guidelines (including immunizations, screenings, and communicable diseases)Understanding of nurse delegation under the Texas Board of Nursing rulesKnowledge of FERPA and HIPPA as they apply to school health servicesFamiliarity with special programs (Section 504, IEP, medically fragile students)Ability to support and implement policies and proceduresProficient keyboarding and file maintenance skillsAbility to write routine reports and correspondenceStrong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skillsAbility to manage multiple campuses and prioritiesExperience:Nursing experience preferredMajor Responsibilities and Duties:Program Leadership & ComplianceAssist the Head District Nurse in implementing and maintaining the district's health services program.Support compliance with federal, state and local health regulations and district policies.Assist in developing and updating health procedures and protocols.Help ensure consistency of health practices across all campuses.Provide direct care using professional assessment skills, the nursing process, individualized healthcare plans (IHPs), and assist in establishing school health protocols. Provide health counseling and instruction to individual students as needed.Assess student problems, communicate with parents regarding individual students, and ensure appropriate referrals and follow up as needed. Serve as a liaison between school personnel, the family, healthcare professionals, and the community.Notify parents of accident or illness. Secure emergency medical care for students as needed.Develop and implement individualized healthcare plans (IHPs) and evaluate outcomes of skilled and direct nursing care and procedures for medically fragile students to ensure safe integration of the student into the school environment.Serve as health advocate for students.Ensure that medications are administered to students according to district policy and procedures.Establish and implement effective procedures for carrying out mandatory screening programs.May make home visits to help with student health problems as necessary.Participate or assist in development of campus health education, educate faculty and staff as needed on health-related topics, and provide health education to individuals and groups including contributing to campus communications to parents and the local community regarding health issues. ConsultationCollaborate closely with campus principal and other staff and provide leadership to ensure a healthy school environment. Work to meet the health needs of the general school population and those students with identified health conditions.Participate in Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee (ARD) meetings of students with identified health needs and develop Individual Health Plans (IHPs) as needed. Collaborate with district personnel, special education staff, campus nurses and administrators as needed regarding implementation of IEP goals, and services.Advise campus administration in crisis or emergency situations and participate in assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse. AdministrationWork with the Head District Registered Nurse to develop and coordinate continuing evaluation of campus health program and make changes based on findings. Help develop and recommend campus policies and procedures to promote the health and wellness of students and staff.Support, train, and participate in evaluating the campus nurses, unlicensed diabetes care assistants, other unlicensed assistive personnel, or other school personnel who have responsibility for assisting students with health needs.Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required, including clinic records and accurate and confidential student health records such as immunization records, medication administration records, individual student treatment records, and IHPs.Requisition supplies and equipment needed to maintain clinic inventory.Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health rule, State Board of Education rule, and board policy. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.Report potential health and safety hazards to administration.Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures. Professional DevelopmentMaintain professional nursing skills and knowledge as required by the Texas Nurse Practice Act and the Texas Board of Nursing including licensure and certification for mandated screenings, basic life support for healthcare providers (CPR/AED) and First Aid. Supervision & Staff DevelopmentSupervise and support campus nurses when directed or in the absence of the Head District Registered NurseEnsure safe and appropriate delegation of nursing tasks in accordance with the Texas Board of Nursing RulesAssist or provide training for substitute nurses or any staff on medication administration, first aide, CPR/AED, and emergency proceduresEvaluation and Additional DutiesPerformance will be evaluated in accordance with district policies and administrative regulations.Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Health Services or Superintendent.Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:Tools/Equipment Used: Standard medical clinic equipment including automated external defibrillator (AED); special needs adaptive equipment; standard office equipment including computer and peripheralsPosture: Frequent standing, sitting, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing pulling, and twistingMotion: Frequent walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extensionLifting: Frequent light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may require regular heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and position of students with physical disabilities; controlling behavior through physical restraint, assisting non-ambulatory studentsEnvironment: Exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseasesMental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stressThis document describes the general purpose and responsibilities assigned to this job and is not an exhaustive list of all responsibilities and duties that may be assigned or skills that may be required.Reviewed by Date
