Medical Laboratory Specialist Job Description Medical Laboratory Specialists are responsible for clinical competence of personnel, contact with patients when indicated, and interaction with physicians, nursing and other hospital personnel. Maintains clinical expertise of respective department/area to ensure competent evaluation and assessment of appropriate testing methodologies to recommend reagents, instrumentation, and vendors. Establishes Standard Operating Procedures for respective clinical area and coordinates implementation of analyzers and testing including staff training and competency documentation. Qualified individuals will have a bachelor's degree in chemical, physical, biological, or clinical lab science or medical technology. Department: Laboratory Starting Wage: $30.56, pay based on experience Shift: Day shift, 10-hour days, 4 days/week, and weekend/holiday rotation. Requirements: ASCP Certified Medical Laboratory Scientist, 5 years of experience with microbiology, 5 years of department oversight/leadership preferred. Responsibilities Assures all work areas and instruments are well maintained and in operating order., Evaluates and documents competence of testing personnel., Maintains contact with nursing departments, physicians, and other hospital areas for collaborative activities and to improve quality, safety, and service as it relates to lab test performance and utilization., Maintains inventory and orders appropriate supplies., Organizes and directs daily activities of respective clinical/technical area., Participates in continuing education programs., Participates in the interviewing and hiring of job applicants., Performs required testing of systems, samples, and controls., Prepares incident reports and other reports of unusual occurances, testing results, or instrument malfunctions., Prepares required statistical reports for Quality Management, hospital committees, and administrative use., Provides selected monitored indicators for performance improvement activities., Provides training and clinical education for students and new employees., Provides training for staff in department procedures, quality assurance, continuing education, and implementation/processes., Recommends certain instrumentation/methods, vendor/partners, or processes/procedures for implementation within that section., Responsible for quality assurance activities and corrective measures when indicated., Seeks opportunities to improve department performance and productivity., Works closely with LIS for systems procedures, protocols, and instrument and/or reference lab interfaces., Writes and edits department policies, procedures, and protocols; implements LEAN tools (e.g. standard work instructions) to improve processes.
