Controller – Nonprofit Organization📍 Alexandria, VA | Full-Time | OnsiteA well-established nonprofit organization in the Alexandria, VA area is seeking a hands-on Controller to lead day-to-day accounting and finance operations within a complex, mission-driven environment. This individual will oversee the full accounting function, manage and mentor a team, and partner closely with executive leadership on financial reporting, compliance, process improvements, budgeting, and operational strategy.This is an excellent opportunity for a strong accounting leader who enjoys balancing strategic oversight with hands-on involvement in the day-to-day accounting operations. The organization offers long-term stability, strong funding, and a highly visible leadership role with exposure to executive leadership and board reporting.Key ResponsibilitiesAccounting & Financial OperationsLead all day-to-day accounting operations including:General LedgerAccounts PayableAccounts ReceivablePayrollBillingFixed AssetsInventory accountingBank and account reconciliationsOversee monthly, quarterly, and annual close processesEnsure timely and accurate preparation of financial statements and management reporting packagesMaintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, and financial proceduresManage cash flow reporting and operational financial analysisReporting, Audit & ComplianceCoordinate annual financial statement audits and support external auditorsAssist with preparation and review of Form 990s and other regulatory/compliance filingsPrepare board-level reporting packages and variance analysisEnsure compliance with applicable accounting standards and nonprofit reporting requirementsOversee tax filings, licensing requirements, and financial compliance mattersLeadership & Process ImprovementLead, mentor, and develop accounting staffPartner cross-functionally with operational and business unit leadersDrive accounting process improvements, automation initiatives, and operational efficienciesSupport an upcoming ERP/system implementation initiativeServe as a visible and collaborative finance leader across the organizationQualificationsBachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field10+ years of progressive accounting experiencePrior leadership experience overseeing accounting teamsStrong understanding of:GAAPFinancial reportingInternal controlsAudit managementBudgeting and forecastingExperience within nonprofit organizations strongly preferredCPA strongly preferredPublic accounting background highly preferredExperience with ERP systems and accounting system implementations highly desiredStrong communication and presentation skills with the ability to interact with executive leadership and board membersPreferred ExperienceNonprofit accounting and complianceForm 990 preparation/reviewAnnual audit managementSage Intacct or ERP implementation exposureProcess improvement and operational transformation initiativesWhy This Opportunity?Highly visible leadership role within a stable and mission-driven organizationOpportunity to oversee and improve the full accounting functionStrong blend of strategic leadership and hands-on operational accountingExposure to executive leadership and board reportingLong-term growth potential within a collaborative environment
