Library Student Worker - Summer 2026
This position is funded through either department funds or Federal Work Study (FWS) funds. Students who are not eligible for FWS are still encouraged to apply, as department funding may be available.Manager: Krista Ohrtman/Becky FolkertsHours: 5-7 hours per weekLocation: Mikkelsen LibraryPosition Duration: Summer Year 5/25/2026 to 8/25/2026General description/purpose:Assists the Mikkelsen Library staff with tasks such as directing patrons to specific departments and resources in the library, shelf maintenance, and special projects as needed. May assist in transporting materials and equipment across campus and processing requests.Position SpecificationsTechnical skills:Ability to use basic functions of campus network including email, shared files, and web browsing.Familiarity with OCLC/WMS to check items in and outFamiliarity with WorldCat Discovery (library catalog) to assist in locating materialsBasic knowledge of desktop computers, telephones, printers and other office technology.Interpersonal skills:Ability to accept direction and feedback from supervisorAbility to communicate clearly with library patrons, co-workers, and supervisorsWorking Conditions:Employee must be able to move about the entire library building so as to be in a position to or assistlibrary patrons. Must be able to operate and use a personal computer, communicate with others in person and via telephone.Must be able to work evenings and weekends as necessaryPhysical requirements:Employee must be able to stand, remain stationary and move actively for extended periods of time including walking, stooping, bending. Must be able to climb or reach overhead and handle and move heavy items, fully loaded book trucks, and computer equipment. Ability to travel to locations outside library.Hazards:Employee may occasionally handle chemicals, sharp tools, and hot items found in office settings. May encounter materials that show evidence of mold.Required qualifications:Student at Augustana UniversityEligible for financial aid and federal work study program.Desired qualifications:Interest in libraries and principles of customer service.Coordination/coaching:Coordination/coaching given:Guidance and advice given to other student workers.Coordination/coaching received:Receives coaching and guidance from Library Assistants and Access Services Librarian.Receives guidance and advice from other student workersReceives periodic coaching and guidance from the Director of the Library, Assistant Director, Media Librarian, Cataloger/Government Documents Librarian, and Reference Librarian/Instruction Coordinator.Major areas of Responsibility:Assist library patrons in fulfilling basic library tasks includingChecking items in and outBasic troubleshooting of technologyRetrieving and shelving library itemsReserving/accessing library study roomsAssist in overall functioning of libraryPerforming inventory of library itemsLight cleaning to maintain a welcoming library environmentAssist library supervisor in various tasks/projects specific to assigned library department, including:Circulation: The student will be able to accurately retrieve library materials for circulation and shelve them after use.Interlibrary Loan: The student will be able to accurately assist in the fulfillment of interlibrary loan requests for patrons both in the Augustana community and for our library partners.Technical Services: The student will assist in the processing of new library materials to the physical collection and maintenance of the current collection including periodicals and government documents.Media Services: The student will assist in all aspects of the library's Media Services department, including printing, transporting materials and equipment across campus, inventorying and maintaining hardware, receiving and processing donations, and special projects as neededElectronic Resources/Reference: The student will assist in projects that support information literacy instruction, publicity, and electronic resources.Application Process:Qualified applicants will be selected and interviewed.
