Technical Laboratory staff analyzes patient testing that helps physicians to diagnose and treat diseases. Medical Lab Technicians collect and analyze body fluids, tissue and other substances to determine normal or abnormal findings. This position is an Essential position at the facility to ensure efficient operations and patient care. Employees hired into an Essential position are expected to report to work for their scheduled shifts regardless of the environmental weather and road conditions that may exist.Position Duties and Responsibilities:Medical Laboratory TechniciansPerform phlebotomy procedures to obtain blood samplesPrepare samples for analysisLocate, isolate and identify microorganisms in body fluid and perform susceptibility testingMonitor tests and proceduresAnalyze the chemical content of fluidsMatch blood for transfusion medicineTest for drug levels in the bloodPerform necessary and required maintenance to any equipment used to aid in testingPerform any and all quality matrix and standard materials analysis to ensure accurate and precise reporting of results.Facility General Responsibilities:Attend facility new hire orientation as scheduled by HRComplete Department Orientation Initial Competency within 7 days of hire dateComplete Department Initial Skills Competency within 90 days of hire dateFollow facility and OSHA safety rules and proceduresRespect cultural and religious practices of patients from all backgroundsFollow HIPAA regulations at all timesBe punctual and dependent for assigned shiftsDress within the dress code requirements of the facilityIdentifies all patients using at least two identifiers verbally (name and DOB), and by checking ID braceletFollows Hospital Wide and Department Specific policies and proceduresMust interact with physicians, guest, staff, and patients pleasantly, cooperatively, and effectivelyKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Sound understanding of the clinical laboratory dynamics and workflowSound understanding of Laboratory practiceCognitive skills as related to a clinical laboratoryCritical thinking and problem-solving abilitiesGood Communication skills with ability to communicate appropriately with all age groupsVersatile knowledge of basic computer skills with a preferred skill set of Information Technology, iCloud capabilities and Microsoft OfficeAbility to perform under stress and cope with difficult situationsGood time management and organizational skills to complete patient testing, lab maintenance and quality control in a timely mannerContinued practice of good stewardship as a representative member of the laboratory department as well as the hospital unit as a wholeMust be able to work as a functioning member of the various team situations that a healthcare setting demandsPosition Requirements: Education, Work Experience, Licensure, Certifications:Current license with the State of Tennessee as a Medical Laboratory ProfessionalExperience as a Medical Laboratory Technician is preferred but not requiredBLS must be obtained within the first 30 days of hireWorking Conditions:Patients need round-the-clock care; therefore, working hours include days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Clinical / Technical laboratory staff spends a considerable amount of time walking, bending, stretching and standing; therefore, they must follow proper body mechanics to guard against injury. Clinical / Technical laboratory staff must be able to work accurately around frequent interruptions. Lab staff frequently faces hazards from exposure to chemicals and infectious diseases and must be prepared for such instances and take proper precautions at all times. In addition, lab staff may have to collect blood samples from patients that may be confused, irrational, agitated, and/or uncooperative.Physical Requirements / Demands:Ability to lift twenty (20) pounds.
