12The role: Data Security Architect
Key Responsibilities
Data Discovery & Visibility
Design and implement enterprise-wide mechanisms todiscover where data residesacross on-premises, cloud, SaaS, data lakes, and third-party environments
Establish and maintain an authoritativedata inventorycovering structured and unstructured data
Data Classification & Sensitivity
Define and enforce standards toidentify and classify data types , including confidential, regulated, proprietary, and intellectual property data
Ensure classification scales across diverse data sources and platforms
Data Source & Lineage Governance
Identify and documentdata sources, data flows, and data lineageacross systems
Assess risk associated with data movement, duplication, and exposure
AI & Data Consumption Risk
Assess and governhow data is consumed by AI agents, ML models, and analytics platforms
Evaluate risks associated withtraining data, inference data, prompts, and outputs
Define controls to prevent unauthorized use of sensitive or IP data in AI workflows
Intellectual Property Protection
Evaluate and implementIP protection mechanisms , includingdata watermarking, tagging, and fingerprinting
Ensure safeguards are in place to prevent data exfiltration, misuse, or IP leakage
Security Architecture & Controls
Define data protection architecture aligned withleast privilege, zero trust, and defense-in-depth principles
Partner with IAM, cloud security, and application teams to enforce access controls
Drive integration withDSPM, DLP, encryption, and monitoring solutions
Risk, Compliance & Governance
Translate regulatory, legal, and contractual requirements into actionable data protection controls
Support audits, risk assessments, and incident response with defensible data intelligence
Establish metrics and reporting for data risk posture
Leadership & Collaboration
Serve as a trusted advisor to engineering, data, legal, privacy, and AI teams
Lead architectural reviews and influence platform design decisions
Mentor junior architects and security engineers
Required Qualifications
13-15 yearsof experience in data security, information protection, security architecture, or related roles
Deep expertise indata discovery, classification, and access governance
Strong understanding ofcloud data platforms(AWS, Azure, GCP) and SaaS ecosystems
Hands-on experience withDSPM, DLP, encryption, or data governance tools
Solid understanding ofAI/ML data pipelines and AI risk management
Experience implementingIP protection techniques , including watermarking or tagging
Strong knowledge of regulatory frameworks (GDPR, SOX, privacy, IP protection)
Ability to translate complex technical risks into business-level insights
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working withDSPM platforms(e.g., Cyera, Wiz DSPM, BigID)
Familiarity withsecure AI adoption frameworks
Background in financial services or regulated industries
Architecture certifications (e.g., CISSP, CCSP, cloud security certs)
Compensation/Benefits Information (US Applicants Only):S&P Global states that the anticipated base salary range for this position is $143,000 - $205,000. Final base salary for this role will be based on the individual's geographical location as well as experience and qualifications for the role.
In addition to base compensation, this role is eligible for an annual incentive plan. This role is not eligible for additional compensation such as an annual incentive bonus or sales commission plan.This role is eligible to receive additional S&P Global benefits.
