Job Title: Phlebotomist IIJob DescriptionThe Phlebotomist II supports a high-volume clinical laboratory by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, ensuring accurate labeling and handling, and maintaining specimen integrity from collection through transport. This role also assists with troubleshooting, participates in training activities, and recommends workflow improvements to support efficient and safe operations in a fast-paced lab or hospital environment.ResponsibilitiesPerform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a fast-paced clinical setting.Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures and protocols.Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is complete and accurate.Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders.Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy.Package specimens for transport, following all procedures necessary to maintain specimen integrity.Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes.Follow protocol-specific procedures for specimen handling and transport to preserve sample quality.Update and maintain accurate patient and specimen information in laboratory systems.Record maintenance data and perform routine decontamination tasks in the work area as required.Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, labeling, and workflow.Participate in training activities and support the training of others as needed.Make recommendations to improve workflow and overall efficiency within the department.Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety standards.Attend and complete annual department training sessions and required refreshers.Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory results or information to satisfy inquiries in a professional manner.Deliver courteous and responsive customer service to patients, clinical staff, and colleagues.Essential SkillsValid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.At least 2 years of phlebotomy experience, with a minimum of 6 months performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture and blood draws using straight and butterfly needles.Hands-on experience with specimen collection, labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and storage.Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify orders.Strong attention to detail to ensure 100% accuracy in labeling and test requisitions.Working knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and the ability to follow safety protocols.Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.High school diploma or GED.Effective verbal communication skills to explain procedures clearly and courteously to patients.Customer service skills to interact professionally with patients and healthcare staff.Additional Skills & Qualifications2–4 years of overall experience in a clinical laboratory or hospital setting.Experience working in a high-volume, fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and quality.Ability to troubleshoot issues related to specimen collection, labeling, and workflow.Willingness to participate in ongoing training and annual department education.Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and specimens simultaneously.Work EnvironmentThis role operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment that requires frequent interaction with patients and clinical staff.
