Job Title: Phlebotomist IIJob DescriptionThe Phlebotomist II supports a busy clinical laboratory by performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collections, troubleshooting issues, training others, and recommending improvements to workflow. This role ensures accurate specimen handling and documentation while providing clear, courteous explanations of procedures to patients in a fast-paced environment.ResponsibilitiesPerform venipunctures and other blood draws accurately and efficiently using straight needles and butterfly needles.Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols.Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure proper identification and accuracy.Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders.Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy.Package specimens for transport and follow all procedures necessary to maintain specimen integrity.Store specimens at the required temperature and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling.Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures as required to maintain a safe and compliant work area.Update patient information accurately in the system and maintain thorough documentation.Fully understand and interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct specimen collection and processing.Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety and regulatory requirements.Attend annual department trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of procedures and regulations.Answer telephone calls in a professional manner and read or communicate laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, processing, or workflow and make recommendations to improve efficiency.Support training efforts by demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques and workflow practices to team members as needed.Essential SkillsValid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.Minimum of 2 years of experience in phlebotomy, including at least 6 months performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.Proven experience performing venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles.Hands-on experience with specimen collection, including blood, urine, and fecal samples.Ability to label, centrifuge, split, freeze, store, and package specimens in accordance with test orders and protocols.Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verifying test requisitions or computer labels against orders.Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for data entry, documentation, and basic reporting.Thorough understanding of OSHA and DEP regulations related to laboratory and specimen handling.High School Diploma or GED.Ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients, colleagues, and healthcare providers.Strong organizational skills and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.Additional Skills & QualificationsExperience recording maintenance data and performing decontamination procedures in a laboratory setting.Familiarity with updating patient information and working with laboratory information systems or similar software.Ability to interpret and fully understand physicians’ orders related to laboratory testing.Experience answering telephone inquiries and reading or relaying laboratory results.Comfort providing guidance and informal training on phlebotomy techniques and workflow improvements.Demonstrated reliability and consistency in following established procedures and protocols.Work EnvironmentThis role operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting with a focus on high-volume specimen collection and processing. The schedule typically includes Monday through Friday with additional Saturday hours as needed. You work with standard phlebotomy equipment such as straight needles, butterfly needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and temperature-controlled storage units. The environment requires strict adherence to safety and regulatory standards, including OSHA and DEP guidelines, and involves regular participation in annual department trainings.
