Job Summary:
The Registered Nurse Instructor for the Practical Nursing Program is responsible for delivering both classroom and clinical instruction to students pursuing a career as Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs). This role involves teaching foundational and advanced nursing skills, supervising clinical rotations, and preparing students for state licensure. The RN Instructor combines expert knowledge in nursing practice with effective teaching techniques to help students develop the clinical competence, critical thinking, and professionalism required for a successful career in nursing.
Key Responsibilities:
Classroom & Lecture Instruction:
Develop and deliver engaging lectures covering practical nursing topics, including anatomy, pharmacology, patient assessment, care planning, and disease management.
Use a variety of teaching methods, such as multimedia presentations, case studies, and group discussions, to enhance learning and accommodate diverse learning styles.
Ensure that course content aligns with state requirements, program curriculum, and industry best practices.
Clinical Instruction & Supervision:
Supervise and instruct students during clinical rotations in health care facilities, guiding them through practical application of classroom knowledge.
Demonstrate and teach nursing procedures, including medication administration, wound care, vital signs monitoring, and patient interaction.
Monitor and evaluate student performance in clinical settings, ensuring adherence to patient safety protocols, infection control standards, and facility policies.
Skills Lab & Simulation Training:
Conduct skills labs and simulation exercises, providing hands-on training in procedures that students will encounter as practical nurses.
Teach students to use medical equipment safely and effectively, including blood pressure cuffs, IV pumps, catheters, and other clinical tools.
Provide personalized feedback and guidance to ensure students are proficient in clinical skills and ready for real-world application.
Student Assessment & Evaluation:
Assess student performance through exams, practical skills assessments, and clinical evaluations, providing constructive feedback to support improvement.
Track and document students' progress, attendance, and skill mastery, ensuring they meet program and regulatory requirements.
Prepare evaluations and assessments that support students preparedness for licensing exams and professional practice.
Licensure Exam Preparation:
Prepare students for the NCLEX-PN licensure exam by covering key competencies and providing practice tests, study resources, and test-taking strategies.
Conduct review sessions and skills check-offs to reinforce core knowledge and improve confidence before the licensing exam.
Guide students through the licensure application process, ensuring they understand exam requirements and deadlines.
Curriculum Development & Course Planning:
Develop, update, and organize curriculum and instructional materials that reflect current standards in nursing practice and education.
Collaborate with program administrators to ensure alignment of course objectives with state and national nursing education standards.
Evaluate and integrate new teaching methods, tools, and technologies to continually improve instruction and student outcomes.
Professionalism & Ethical Practice:
Serve as a role model for professional behavior, ethical standards, and compassionate patient care, emphasizing nursing values and responsibility.
Teach students to practice within the ethical and legal scope of practical nursing, including patient confidentiality and advocacy.
Encourage continuous learning and professional growth, promoting a culture of respect, empathy, and dedication to quality care.
Collaboration with Faculty & Clinical Partners:
Work closely with fellow instructors, clinical site coordinators, and health care facilities to ensure a seamless educational experience.
Communicate with clinical site staff regarding student performance and expectations, addressing any issues that arise during clinical rotations.
Participate in faculty meetings, training sessions, and curriculum review to stay updated on best practices and program enhancements.
Qualifications:
Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state, with a Masters degree in Nursing (MSN) required.
Minimum of 3-5 years of clinical experience as an RN, preferably in acute care, long-term care, or education settings.
Previous teaching experience in nursing or health care education is highly preferred.
Strong knowledge of nursing principles and patient care practices
Excellent communication, instructional, and mentoring skills, with the ability to engage and inspire students.
Proficiency in using educational technology, simulation tools, and online learning platforms.
