Civil Engineering (Structural Engineering), Assistant Professor

: The Civil Engineering Department at Cal Poly Pomona invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Structural Engineering beginning in Fall 2027. The department is particularly interested in candidates who bring forward-thinking perspectives to structural engineering education, scholarship, and professional practice.While the position is primarily intended for appointment at the Assistant Professor level, candidates with substantial academic, research, and professional accomplishments may be considered for tenure-track appointment at the Associate Professor rank.The successful candidate will:Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in structural engineering and related civil engineering areas. Teaching assignments will be based on departmental needs and may include lower-division, upper-division, laboratory, and graduate-level courses.Establish an active scholarly agenda, pursuing externally funded research and applied projects, mentoring student research, and collaborating with industry and academic partners.Contribute to curriculum development and support the continued advancement of hands-on, industry-connected learning experiences.Participate in department, college, and university service activities.Minimum requirements include:Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or a closely related field, with emphasis in the field of Structural Engineering, by the date of appointment. The Ph.D. degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.Demonstrated teaching excellence or strong teaching interest in engineering.Evidence of ongoing scholarly research in the field of structural engineering, or evidence of professional practice.Preferred/Desired Qualifications:The department is particularly interested in candidates with one or more of the following qualifications:Expertise in areas aligned with future directions of the profession, such as earthquake engineering, seismic design, resilient infrastructure, mass timber, sustainable and low-carbon materials, structural health monitoring, advanced construction technologies, computational modeling, or emerging applications of artificial intelligence and data-driven engineering in the built environmentA minimum of one year of postbaccalaureate professional practice in structural engineeringLicensed Professional Engineer (PE) or Structural Engineer (SE), preferably in CaliforniaEvidence of continued growth and effectiveness in teaching or instructional experience in higher educationEvidence of continued growth in scholarly research and peer-reviewed publicationsDemonstrated successful record of student advising and leadership potential in guiding and supporting construction student competition teamsApplication Process:A completed application will consist of:Cover letter in which you describe your interest in the position, relevant experience, and how your qualifications align with the role;Curriculum vitae;Teaching Philosophy statement (2-page max) that addresses Cal Poly Pomona's commitment to excellence in education;Research Statement (2-page max);The names and contact information of three to five individuals who can serve as references;Unofficial transcripts (undergraduate and graduate).
