What you will be doing: As a Use of Force Instructor your primary responsibility will be to facilitate student learning using confrontational simulation (ConSim) scenarios. Post-scenario, you will debrief students regarding various legal and use of force matters, tactical decision making, communication skills, and other topics. Your other responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, performing administrative tasks related to scenario training (preparing equipment and the training environment, delivering safety briefings, etc.) and running virtual simulation (MILO) training. You may also teach use of force topics in a classroom setting on occasion. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to work with basic students in other venues (e.g. firearms, defensive tactics, tactical skills, classroom instruction, etc.) outside of the use of force program. About DPSST: The Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) oversees the development of professional standards and the delivery of quality training for law enforcement officers, corrections officers, parole and probation officers, firefighters, telecommunicators, and emergency medical dispatchers. Employees who are Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) participating members will have their base salary increased by 6.95% and pay a 6% employee contribution to PERS; the salary range noted above reflects base salary only. Onsite Cafeteria Onsite wellness options Minimum Qualifications: Three (3) years of professional level experience providing use of force instruction and/or based on ORS 181.610 through 181.690. Typically, this experience is in the area of public safety (law enforcement officers, adult and youth corrections officers, parole and probation officers, fire service professionals, telecommunicators, and emergency medical dispatchers). Experience as a coach or mentor Ability to readily adapt to unanticipated challenges Experience as an instructor related to: Use of force scenarios, use of force case law Highly motivated individual with the ability to work independently and within a team environment Strong operational experience applying adult learning theory Preferred Qualifications: Preference may be given to candidates who have recent (within the last 3 years) experience as a defensive tactics (DT) instructor. Preference may also be given to candidates who have recent (within the last 3 years) experience working in public safety (law enforcement, corrections, parole and probation).
