What you will be doing: As the Defensive Tactics Coordinator, you will have a wide variety of responsibilities related to creating, administering, evaluating, and adjusting the defensive tactics program. You will work with a team to create and/or update curriculum in order to ensure basic students are being offered the best possible training within the confines of Oregon law, case law, and DPSST policy. You will also make recommendations regarding the personnel and equipment needed to implement the defensive tactics program in a safe manner. You will work with and lead a team of defensive tactics instructors. You will mentor and develop this team to ensure each member is reaching their full potential. You will assign daily work tasks, prepare equipment and training spaces, and provide direct instruction to students. Much of your work will require great communication skills. You will communicate with other skills coordinators and class coordinators at DPSST on a regular basis; and in doing so, you will foster a culture of inclusiveness and teamwork. You will coordinate trainings and curriculum changes with the DPSST Regional Training team. You will interact with constituent law enforcement agencies, corrections agencies, and a variety of other public service entities in an effort to promote positive, collaborative relationships. About DPSST: The Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) oversees the development of professional standards and the delivery of quality training for law enforcement officers, corrections officers, parole and probation officers, firefighters, telecommunicators, and emergency medical dispatchers. Employees who are Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) participating members will have their base salary increased by 6.95% and pay a 6% employee contribution to PERS; the salary range noted above reflects base salary only. Onsite Cafeteria Onsite wellness options Minimum Qualifications: Six (6) years of professional level experience related to the Defensive Tactics and/or based on ORS 181.610 through 181.690. Typically, this experience is in the area of public safety (law enforcement officers, adult and youth corrections officers, parole and probation officers, fire service professionals, telecommunicators, and emergency medical dispatchers). Experience must have included delivering structured training sessions or on-the-job training. College-level coursework related to the subject matter of instruction may substitute on the basis of 45-quarter units per year of experience up to a maximum of three (3) years.
