The district courts, combined with the appellate courts and the Supreme Court, make up the judicial branch of the federal government. The Southern District of Texas consists of the following seven divisional offices: Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Galveston, Houston, Laredo, McAllen, and Victoria. We are seeking qualified applicants for a case manager to District Judge Nicholas Ganjei in Houston. The case manager manages the judge's cases and functions as the liaison between the judge and the attorneys, Clerk's Office and the public to ensure that cases proceed smoothly and efficiently. Target grade is CL27 ($68,886 - $111,978). The successful applicant will be placed at the highest grade and step for which they qualify, up to step 61 of the target grade. Preference will be given to current judiciary employees or those with judiciary experience.Representative DutiesThe case manager performs a wide variety of duties including: Manage the judge's cases by calendaring, including distributing and monitoring deadlines, monitoring filing of pertinent documents, and timely responses to judicial orders. Serve as primary source of information on scheduling conferences, hearings, trials, and other case processes. Manage and organize exhibits used in court proceedings, including setting up and troubleshooting electronic evidence presentation systems. Attend court sessions and conferences. Assist with the orderly flow of proceedings including, but not limited to, setting up the courtroom and assuring the presence of all necessary participants. Take notes of proceedings, rulings, notices and prepare minute entries electronically. Review cases or reports for necessary actions. Keep judge and immediate staff informed of case progress. Assist the judge and parties in jury selection and maintain records of jury selection and attendance. Answer questions from parties and the public regarding case related inquiries and obtaining transcripts. Refer defendants to Probation Office as appropriate. Inform jury clerk of upcoming trials, needs for jurors, etc. Docket orders, pleadings, judgments, and minutes as directed by local court policy, utilizing applicable automated systems. Assist in the accurate statistical reporting requirements of the Administrative Office. QualificationsA bachelor's degree and prior experience in the Judicial Support Specialist program are preferred. Previous case management/relief case management experience is strongly preferred. To qualify for the position at the CL 27, two years of experience must be specialized experience with at least one year equivalent to the CL 26. Candidates who do not have the necessary specialized experience to qualify for the CL 27 will be placed at the highest classification level for which they currently qualify, progressing annually until the CL 27 is reached (assuming satisfactory performance).Specialized experience is progressively responsible clerical or administrative experience requiring the regular and recurring application of clerical procedures that demonstrate the ability to apply a body of rules, regulations, directives, or laws and involve the routine use of specialized terminology and automated software. Applicant must be efficient with computers and with word processing, e-mail, and calendaring software. Must be able to deal politely and effectively with judges, Clerk's Office staff, lawyers, jurors, and litigants in scheduling, work flow, and courtroom logistics. Applicant must be willing to work extended hours and travel as needed.
