Serves as a Maintenance Worker at the Old River Control Complex performing maintenance activities as well as operation of the structures of the complex. Operates the Auxiliary Control Structure in coordination with a hydroelectric power plant in order to maintain a 30/70 distribution rate between the Atchafalaya River and the Mississippi River. Makes appropriate gate changes based on gate change requests received from Engineering Division; also makes designated gate changes in the event of an unscheduled shutdown of the power plant. May be responsible for the operation of the structure at night, on weekends, or at other times when supervisor is off-duty; responsible for ensuring that all necessary precautions are taken to assure that the structure is secure and safe while on duty. Incumbent is also required to operate equipment (motorboats, tractors, forklifts, etc.) and gantry cranes necessary to adjust the gate openings at all flood control structures under the Old River Project Manager. Performs a variety of maintenance and equipment operation tasks in connection with the upkeep of equipment, buildings, grounds and facilities at the flood control structures under the Old River Project Manager. The work includes but is not limited to rough carpentry, painting, excavation and backfill, grounds-keeping, routine servicing of equipment, cleaning of parts and equipment, and housekeeping. Assists hired labor units in the sandblasting and painting of structure gates or other work associated with the repairs of a flood control structure. Assists higher graded employees engaged in maintenance or repairs. As required, operates pickup trucks to transport personnel, supplies, and equipment throughout the facilities and public roads.WG-08 is the full performance level for this positionPerforms other duties as assigned.Other Conditions And RequirementsExperience Requirements: Has the ability to perform common maintenance and repair of the equipment including Incumbent must be familiar with the operation of all flood control projects under the Old River Project Manager, including the controls and the emergency backup power supply used to operate the Auxiliary Control Structure. Must be able to understand and follow verbal and written instructions; must be able to read gages and gate settings and other hydraulic instruments. Must possess knowledge of basic math, be proficient in the use and nomenclature of machinery as it applies to gate operating equipment, gantry cranes, meters, automatic controls, and generators. Must be able to communicate effectively and distinctly via radio and/or telephone. Must be capable of performing a variety of sub-journeyman level maintenance and repair-work common to the mechanic, carpentry, plumbing, welding, and other trades. Must be acquainted with the work practices and common hand and powered tools used in the various trades, be able to use standard testing and measuring devices, and be capable of carrying out routine and repetitive type maintenance and repair work to equipment and components. Performs rough carpentry; must know how to prepare surfaces and apply paints and preservatives; be able to remove, clean, or replace components of water, pneumatic, and sewage systems. Must be able to operate motor vehicles such as pick-up trucks.
