Announcement TypeTARP - Direct-Hire Authority (DHA)Position TypePermanentUSACE Organization Mississippi Valley Division (MVD) - New Orleans DistrictLocations (City, State)Vidalia, LAPosition Overview/DutiesThis is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Competitive Service Positions to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.Serves as Maintenance Mechanic for the New Orleans District of USACE. Serves as Maintenance Mechanic for the flood control projects and related floodways and streams under the Old River Project Manager. Is responsible for the accomplishment of a wide range of equipment operation, maintenance, and repair tasks at the structures. Performs the full range of field maintenance and repairs to heavy engineer type equipment, rail gantry cranes, pumping stations, tractors, tracks, and automotive plant; also accomplishes mechanical repairs to gates, machinery, and other equipment at the various structures. Operates road grader, caterpillar and wheeled tractors, etc. over all types of terrain; operates gantry crane to adjust gates or move equipment; operates pumping station; and may operate small outboard powered motorboat and gasoline powered spray equipment to apply herbicides and in clearing operations. Performs carpentry, painting, and cement finishing work. May occasionally be required to wear a respirator while performing duties. May direct the activities of lower grade employees. May be required to operate other flood control structures under the Old River Project Manager, required to operate equipment and cranes necessary to adjust gate openings at the flood control structures; responsible for the manipulation of the gates in the correct sequence and assuring that all gates are set correctly. Maintains maintenance records using Facilities and Equipment Maintenance (FEM). Assists the Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor in checking and maintaining adequate supply of tools, equipment, materials, and supplies necessary for operation.Other Conditions And RequirementsExperience Requirements: Is required to know the mechanical makeup, operating characteristics, and working relationships of a variety of systems and subsystems of heavy engineering type equipment, automotive plant, and other equipment and machinery at the structure. Must be skilled in the use of diagnostic methods and equipment, be able to understand and interpret technical manuals and drawings and be able to use common hand and powered tools of the various trades. Is required to be familiar with the trade's practices used in accomplishing carpentry, painting, cement finishing, etc. Is required to be able to perform the simple welding of differing shapes and thickness using gas or electric methods.Must know the uses of the various controls that operate grader, tractors, etc. and be able tomanipulate these controls with the fine touch needed when operating on rough terrain or when working to close specifications. Must have good hand, foot, and eye coordination. Must be able to identify obnoxious vegetation and be able to apply herbicides with sufficient control to avoid damage to useful plants.
