FACULTY EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITYDEPARTMENT OF ART AND DESIGNPart-Time Lecturer Pool PositionPOSITION AVAILABLE: Multiple temporary, part-time lecturers to teach Art History, including lower-division survey of design history, advanced topical surveys of non-Western art and of contemporary art, and advanced topical writing-intensive seminars on non-Western art and on contemporary art in Fall Semester 2025, and Spring Semester 2026. All courses meet at least 50% in-person at the Hayward Campus. One or more temporary, part-time lecturers to teach Art Studio, Illustration, Photography, Graphic Design, Game Design, and/or Web Design in Fall Semester 2025, and Spring Semester 2026. Nearly all studio and design activity courses are 100% in-person at the Hayward Campus.THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Art and Design offers coursework leading to a B.A. or B.F.A in Art with seven options: Art History & Visual Studies, Art & Design (general), Fine Art Practice, Graphic Design, Illustration, Interaction & Game Design, and Video & Animation. Coursework in this area focuses on the development of students' perceptual skills, their access to the imagination, and their ability to think critically and independently. The Department of Art and Design also offers coursework leading to an M.A. in Interaction Design and Interactive Arts. Coursework in this area focuses on the creative and technical aspects of new technology to create, control, deliver and present meaningful content in a variety of interactive forms. The Department currently has approximately 500 majors.DUTIES OF THE POSITION: B.A./B.F.A. in Art: To teach web design, interaction design, animation, photography, ceramics, printmaking, painting/drawing, sculpture, introductory and advanced studio courses or computer arts/graphic design. B.A. in Art (Art History & Visual Studies Concentration): To teach "Histories of Design," a lower-division survey course, mostly addressing graphic design, that develops writing, reading, and visual literacy skills in the discipline for B.A. and B.F.A. students. To teach "Comparative World Art" and "Contemporary Visual Studies," advanced topical survey courses that further develop writing, reading, and interpretive analysis skills in the discipline for B.A. and B.F.A. students. To teach "Writing about World Art" and "Writing about Contemporary Visual Studies," advanced topical writing-intensive seminar courses that further develop writing, reading, and interpretive analysis, and introduce information literacy and research skills in the discipline for B.A. and B.F.A. students.M.A. in Interaction Design & Interactive Arts: To teach interactive media development using code, physical computing and 3D printing; concepts of multimedia and interaction design; coursework in application of interaction and learning theories to multimedia design and artistic practice.All coursework requires one office hour per course per week. Please note that teaching assignments at California State University, East Bay may include courses at the Hayward campus, Concord Center, and/or online. The policy and expectation of the California State University is that all faculty members will perform all of their duties within the state of California.RANK AND SALARY: Lecturer. Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience. Position appointment is subject to budgetary authorization. The salary schedule information for the Lecturer - Academic Year Classification is available based on the following ranges:Lecturer AY (Range 2) - $5,507 - $6,677Lecturer AY (Range 3) - $6,221 - $13,224Lecturer AY (Range 4) - $6,825 - $14,523Lecturer AY (Range 5) - $8,593 - $15,211The anticipated hiring range is generally at or near the minimum of the appropriate range, commensurate with education and experience.DATE OF APPOINTMENT: Fall Semester begins August 18, 2025; Spring Semester begins January 20, 2026.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum qualifications include a suitable Master's degree in an area of specialization with some college teaching experience.Candidates may be asked to provide evidence of scholarship, creative work, or teaching via peer-review of teaching student-faculty evaluations; syllabi; course assignments; and samples of student work.REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Teaching classes for the B.A. in Art (Art History & Visual Studies Concentration) requires a Ph.D. in Art History or a related field, completed or with dissertation forthcoming, or an M.A. in Art History or a related field with significant teaching experience in Art and/or Design History. For teaching Art History & Visual Studies writing-intensive seminar courses, experience with teaching writing skills is required.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: For teaching Art History & Visual Studies survey courses, experience with teaching reading and writing skills, and working with Canvas LMS are valuable. For all Art History & Visual Studies courses, research specialization in either non-Western art or Contemporary art and/or design (for those courses, respectively) is also valuable.SPECIAL CONDITIONS: Courses in the Art & Design department may be offered in online or hybrid formats or at the Hayward campus (though nearly all courses in the department are offered fully or partially at the Hayward campus).APPLICATION DEADLINE: Positions open until filled.
