We focus on the transcatheter replacement or repair of the four heart valves—aortic, pulmonic, mitral, tricuspid—and the placement of stent grafts to treat aneurysms and dissections of the body’s largest artery, the aorta.This Director-level leadership position is responsible for the management and leadership of the Medical Science Evidence Planning & Publications teams & programs within the SH&A Medical Science group in the Clinical Research & Medical Science organization, in Medtronic’s SH&A Operating Unit (OU).What does it take to be a leader at Medtronic? The Medical Science Director will partner & collaborate with Clinical Research & Medical Science (CRMS) and cross-functional leadership & teams to ensure alignment of evidence & publication plans & prioritization with clinical research strategies & plans and business & therapy needs. The group Director, with their manager(s) and team members, will ensure communication & alignment of evidence planning & publication deliverables. In addition, the Medical Science Director will manage the group’s cost center & budget, resource forecasting, and team development.The Medical Science Director will establish & maintain relationships with external Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs), as well as internal customers, partners, and cross-functional leaders to ensure consistent and timely delivery of relevant, impactful, and meaningful evidence-based insights, across all distribution channels. This is a global role that is dynamic, highly visibility, strategic, people leadership role in one of the most exciting, diverse, impactful OUs providing life-saving therapies to patients.The ideal candidate will have experience insuccessfully building teams and developing people (direct & in-direct reporting lines)timely synthesis of advance scientific knowledge and communicating with various audiences, including senior & executive leadershipconstructive stakeholder management and developing relationships & partnering with KOLs and key customers (internal & external)developing aligned strategies and plans, and on-time execution of plans and deliverablesdeveloping and optimizing tools, processes, operating mechanisms, governance, including adoptionMedical Science related function (i.e., Medical Affairs, Medical Education, Physician Relations), and or Clinical Research and Marketing functions (including upstream, pipeline, strategy) The group Director will report to the SH&A Medical Science functional leader (Sr. Director of SH&A Medical Science) and sit on SH&A Medical Science Leadership Team.Location: Hybrid / Remote, travel up 25-30%, including international travelDuties And ResponsibilitiesIntegrated & Comprehensive Medical Science Evidence Planning & Execution LeadershipStrategic and operational leadership of the Medical Science – Evidence Planning & Publications group to generate, synthesize, and disseminate new evidence-based scientific messages through strategic scientific channels (i.e., podium, manuscripts, etc)Ensure strategic alignment of integrated evidence plans with the business objectives, visibility of execution milestones, communication of issues / risks to stakeholdersEstablish strong collaborative relationships and work in close partnership with key stakeholders (e.g. HEOR, communications, commercial, clinical, stats teams) Drives prioritization and cross functional alignment of Medical Science project opportunitiesBuild and lead a cross-functional governance forum to identify and prioritize evidence needs and oversee development of an integrated evidence generation plan and publications roadmap across SH&A – driving alignment on priorities and key decisionsEnsure decisions on new projects are made in compliance with applicable SOPs and in alignment with OU strategy, research areas of focus, scientific merit, impact, and ability to executeDevelop, track, and report on reach & impact metrics related to evidence plans, publications development and dissemination, strategy and execution to CRMS senior staff and executive business leadershipCommunicate as needed to executive leadership on any medical science project or publication request involving the OU therapy or clinical evidencePresent and represent Medical Science team and perspective to stakeholders, partners, and on key initiativesSupports the Medical Science functional leader in Medical Science functional alignment & communication across the Medical Science Leadership team.People & Team DevelopmentRecruit, retain, and develop talent by fostering an inclusive, engaged team environment. Provide training, oversight, coaching, and accountability to ensure exceptional representation of the Medical Science team internally and externallyDevelops, connects, and motivates individuals and teams by encouraging effective teamwork and collaboration with other functional groupsSupport the Medical Science Teams as needed, including, but not limited to, driving decisions & alignment, ease of work, alignment & prioritization of resourcing, developing impactful evidence-based scientific messages for the business, ensuring alignment with the high-level business strategy plans, managing stakeholder and partnersSupport the Medical Science Teams as needed to develop evidence & dissemination plans for scientific congresses / conferences and represent Medical Science in congress / conference planning meetings to ensure alignment & optimization of evidence distribution strategy and delivery of consistent & accurate scientific messagesSupport the Medical Science Teams as needed to complete publication deliverables including, but not limited to, scientific abstracts, manuscripts, poster presentations, oral presentations, late-breaking trial presentations, and internal presentations for development and submissionSupport the Medical Science Teams as needed with ongoing surveillance of the literature / publications (therapy-specific, and competitive), congress coverage / recaps (summaries of critical presentations, live cases), and disseminate key findings of any major data releases to internal and external stakeholders as appropriate through email blasts and literature review callsSupport the Medical Science Teams to maintain an internal library of slides and publications available upon request for internal and external stakeholdersTechnical Knowledge & Communication, Scientific Rigor & EthicsMaintain and communicate evidence (and therapy) subject matter expertise (SME) of the SH&A space and develop a team with robust knowledge and awareness of the competitive and relevant landscapes to provide scientific input to business stakeholders across the product lifecycleProvide SME, scientific voice, and thought partnership to support the review of downstream materials through established processes (Global Ad Pro review, MedReview, etc)Stays up to date on medical and scientific developments in the assigned therapeutic area by reviewing current literature, monitoring competitor activities, and networking with expertsAttends key scientific conventions to obtain the most up to date medical scientific data (including competitive information)Lead and drive synergies across Medical Science functions (and cross-functions) to ensure scientific accuracy, rigor, and voice and strategic Evidence leadership for the SH&A OUReview publications, slide presentations, and other scientific materials for content and positioningEnsure all regulatory and compliance internal and external guidelines relevant to the position are followedEnsure all Medical Science deliverables are completed with the highest levels of rigor, ethics, and accepted best practices by following company SOPs and industry guidelines (GPP, ICMJE, COPE, etc).The Medical Science Director will be responsible for following the Medtronic Code of Conduct, the CRMS Department Operating Procedures & Mechanisms, and the ICMJE, GPP3, and ADVAMED guidelinesIdentify, screen, and manage the financial and contractual aspects of assigned projects to external medical writing vendors to obtain high quality, impactful scientific deliverablesKOL Interactions and EngagementsDevelop and maintain a network of leading medical physicians (Key Opinion Leaders; PR) locations (USD):$241,600.00 - $362,400.00This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).This position is eligible for an annual long-term incentive plan.The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location.
