Position Type:Summer School K-4 ProgramDate Posted:3/11/2026Location:Various SchoolsAdditional Information: Show/HideNHPS Summer School Physical Education Teacher (Grades K4)REPORTS TO:Building LeaderPosition OverviewThe Physical Education (PE) Teacher is responsible for planning, implementing, and assessing standards-based physical education instruction for students in grades K4. The PE teacher promotes lifelong fitness, physical literacy, teamwork, and healthy lifestyle habits while ensuring a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment for all students.Key ResponsibilitiesInstruction & CurriculumDesign and deliver developmentally appropriate PE lessons aligned with state and national standards (e.g., SHAPE America).Teach fundamental motor skills, movement patterns, fitness concepts, and sport-related skills across grade levels.Integrate health, wellness, nutrition, and social-emotional learning into instruction.Differentiate lessons to meet the diverse physical, cognitive, and social needs of K8 students.Utilize a variety of instructional strategies, technology, and equipment to maximize engagement.Classroom & Behavior ManagementMaintain a safe, well-supervised learning environment during indoor and outdoor activities.Teach and model sportsmanship, teamwork, responsibility, and respectful behavior.Implement consistent routines, expectations, and positive behavior supports.Adapt activities for students with disabilities or medical needs, ensuring inclusive participation.Assessment & DataAssess student progress through skills testing, fitness assessments, observation, and performance tasks.Document growth toward learning objectives and communicate progress with students, parents/guardians, and school leaders.Use data to adjust instruction and support student improvement.Safety & Equipment ManagementEnsure proper setup, use, and storage of PE equipment.Inspect facilities and equipment regularly to maintain safety standards.Follow district protocols regarding injury prevention, emergency response, and student health concerns.Collaboration & Professional ResponsibilitiesCollaborate with teachers, school counselors, nurses, and administrators to support student well-being.Communicate regularly with families regarding curriculum, expectations, and student progress.Participate in professional development, department meetings, and school-wide initiatives.Uphold district policies, state certification requirements, and ethical teaching standards.QualificationsBachelor's degree in Physical Education, Exercise Science, Health Education, or related field.Valid state teaching certification for Physical Education (K8).CPR, First Aid, and AED certification (required or ability to obtain).Experience working with children or adolescents in educational or athletic settings.Strong classroom management, communication, and organizational skills.Preferred Skills & CompetenciesAbility to motivate students and promote a positive attitude toward fitness and physical activity.Experience coaching or leading extracurricular sports programs.Knowledge of adaptive physical education strategies.Commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive teaching practices.Creativity in designing engaging, student-centered lessons.Compensation:Certified Teachers $35.00/hourNon-certified Instructors $17.50/hour* For more information, contact Jennifer Kaye: Jennifer.Kaye@new-haven.k12.ct.us
