JOB DESCRIPTION
Primary Purpose: Implement the special education assessment process; assess the educational, learning styles, and program needs of students referred to special education services; provide diagnostic information and work cooperatively with instructional personnel to provide the most appropriate programs for students with disabilities.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Major Responsibilities and Duties
Instructional Management
Coordinate and participate in the Admission, Review and Dismissal (ARD) Committee to assist with the interpretation of assessment data, appropriate placement, and development of Individual Education Plans (IEP) for students according to district procedures.
Assist with the development and implementation of guidelines for student identification for special education in PK-12.
Act as a case manager for all special education students on campuses assigned, where the employee is the primary evaluation staff member, by providing systematic follow-up, responding to parent and staff inquiries and addressing student educational needs as appropriate.
Select and administer formal and informal assessments to determine student eligibility for special education services according to federal and Texas Education Agency (TEA) regulations.
Participate in student study committees and placement committee decisions for students being considered for special education services.
Assist administrators and teaching personnel to interpret procedures appropriate to special education.
Maintain current knowledge of laws and rules governing the evaluation of students with special needs.
School/Organizational Climate
Provide consultation to parents regarding student evaluation, individual educational needs and programming options available to meet those needs.
School/Organizational Improvement
Provide program consultation to administrators and teachers regarding student educational needs based on group and individual evaluation and assessment data.
Work with staff in the collection and maintenance of appropriate student records/data to provide documentation needed for compliance monitoring.
Assist with the selection of appropriate instruments and analysis of student performance data so that appropriate program changes and/or modifications can be made.
Actively assist, as requested by principals and campus personnel, to meet objectives in their campus action plan.
Program Management
Assist in annual program planning and evaluation for special education to improve the provision of specialized education.
Professional Growth and Development
Maintain membership and participation in professional organizations and/or update professional skills through annual staff development activities.
Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor and/or Superintendent.
School/Community Relations
Collaborate with area agencies serving handicapped students to facilitate communication and the provision of community services to handicapped children.
Effectively communicate with colleagues, students and parents.
Maintain a positive and effective relationship with district personnel.
Attendance at work is an essential function.
EXPERIENCE
Minimum Experience
As required for certification
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Education/Certification:
Master's degree in educational assessment
Valid certification as an educational diagnostician
Valid Texas teaching certificate
Valid Texas driver's license
Eligible for coverage under the District's vehicle insurance program
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of diagnostic procedures, education of special education students, human development, and learning theories
Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
