DescriptionInterim ControllerWe are looking for an experienced Controller to step in and own day-to-day accounting, financial reporting, and internal controls for a nonprofit healthcare organization. This is a hands-on interim engagement for an accounting leader who is comfortable being the person the CFO relies on: closing the books accurately, keeping AP and AR running cleanly, and turning the numbers into something leadership can actually make decisions from.Overview & Highlights:Schedule: Full time, Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PMWork Setting: Nonprofit healthcare organization — corporate accounting and finance departmentRemote / Hybrid / On-Site Status: Remote (On-site preferred; open to a remote support arrangement for the right candidate)Employment Type: Full-time interim engagement (contract)Location & Logistics:Work Environment: Professional administrative office supporting a multi-site nonprofit provider organizationDepartment or Team: Small accounting team — you oversee the accounts payable and accounts receivable staff directlyPatient-Facing Responsibilities: None — this is a corporate finance and accounting roleSystems / Software: Sage financial systems; advanced Excel; broader ERP exposure is a plusTravel: Occasional local travel within the community as neededReporting Structure: Reports directly to the Chief Financial OfficerAbout the Opportunity / A Day in the Life:You are the accounting function's day-to-day owner. Mornings tend to belong to the close and the numbers — reviewing the general ledger, checking reconciliations, working through month-end entries, and making sure the financial statements will hold up. Afternoons shift toward people and process: reviewing AP batches, checking on AR follow-up, answering the questions your two direct reports bring you, and keeping the cadence moving so nothing sits.Because the team is small, the work is genuinely hands-on. You are not managing managers — you are in the ledger, in Excel, and in the reporting yourself, with two people supporting you on the transactional side. That also means you see the whole picture, from a single invoice through to the statements the CFO takes to leadership. The other half of the job is reporting and controls. You produce the monthly, quarterly and annual financial packages, keep cost-center and program-level reporting accurate across multiple sites, maintain the internal controls that protect the organization's assets, and support the annual audit and tax filings. When leadership asks why a line moved, you are the person who can answer it clearly and back it up.Why This Role Stands Out:Real ownership from day one — you run the accounting function, not a slice of itDirect line to the CFO, with visibility into how financial decisions actually get madeSmall, focused team where your work is visible and your judgment carries weightMission-driven nonprofit environment — the money you steward funds services the community depends onPredictable Monday–Friday, 8–5 schedule in a region with an unusually good cost-of-living-to-lifestyle ratioFlexibility on work setting: on-site is preferred, but a remote support arrangement is on the table for the right personWhat We're Looking For:An experienced accountant who is comfortable being hands-on in the ledger, not just reviewing other people's workSomeone who can close the books accurately and on time, month after month, without being chasedA clear communicator who can explain financial results to people who do not work in financeA steady supervisor who can develop and support a small AP/AR teamStrong internal-controls instincts and a low tolerance for sloppy documentationSomeone who can step in quickly and add value without a long ramp-upJob Duties & Responsibilities:Prepare and review monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements for accuracy, compliance and timelinessOwn the month-end and year-end close, including journal entries, accruals and account reconciliationsOversee day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable and general ledger maintenanceSupervise, mentor and develop the AP and AR staff, setting priorities and reviewing their workDevelop and manage budgets, produce forecasts, and support financial planning and analysisMaintain cost-center and program-level reporting that supports a multi-site organizationImplement and maintain internal controls that safeguard assets, ensure accurate reporting and prevent fraudEnsure compliance with GAAP and applicable regulatory and funder requirementsCoordinate with external auditors through the annual audit and implement resulting recommendationsMonitor cash flow and working capital, and support the CFO with liquidity and financial planningOversee tax filings and reporting, ensuring accurate and timely submissionEvaluate and improve financial processes and systems to strengthen efficiency, accuracy and reporting capabilityRequired Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or business5–7 years of accounting or finance experience — healthcare experience is not requiredAt least 3 years in a supervisory or management capacityStrong working knowledge of accounting software, plus advanced Excel skillsIn-depth knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting and regulatory compliance standardsStrong written and verbal communication skills, including presenting financial information to non-financial audiencesMust be able to provide or obtain an Arizona DPS Level One Fingerprint Clearance CardValid driver's license, current auto insurance, and a driving record that meets organizational guidelinesMust be 18 years of age or olderEmployment is contingent on background checks, which may include fingerprint clearance, drug screening, criminal history, driving record, employment verification, education verification and professional referencesPreferred Background:Master's degree in finance or accountingHands-on experience with Sage financial systemsNonprofit healthcare or nonprofit accounting experience, including grant, funder or program-level reportingMulti-site or multi-entity accounting experienceExperience building or refining a cost accounting frameworkFamiliarity with ERP implementations or financial system improvement projectsThis Role Is Likely a Fit If You...Like owning the whole accounting function rather than a narrow piece of itAre as comfortable in the detail as you are in the summary reportingEnjoy being a small team's go-to answer for anything financialTake satisfaction in a clean close, tight reconciliations and an audit that goes smoothlyWant your work to support a mission rather than a marginCan step into an existing process, stabilize it, and improve it as you goThis Role May Not Be a Fit If You...Want a large accounting department with layers of staff underneath youPrefer to review and approve rather than prepare and reconcile yourselfAre looking for a purely strategic or advisory finance seat with no transactional workWould rather avoid supervising and coaching staff day to dayNeed a long onboarding runway before you can produce independentlyAre not open to an interim, contract-based engagementWhy Join Us:This is a chance to bring order, accuracy and confidence to the finances of a nonprofit provider organization that people in the community genuinely rely on.
