Shop Manager/Lead Mechanic
DIRECT HIRE: The Shop Manager / Lead Mechanic is a hands-on leadership role responsible for executing high-performance fleet and equipment operations while performing advanced diagnostics and repairs that directly support field production. Working Location: Onsite, Indianapolis, IN. Pay Range: $35hr - $45hr Shift: M - F, 7am - 3:30pm Benefits: Dental insurance, Health insurance, Paid time off, Professional development assistance, Retirement plan Responsibilities: Perform advanced diagnostics, repairs, and troubleshooting across fleet and equipmentLead by example in the shop, setting the standard for workmanship, urgency, and accountabilityTrain and develop technicians through hands-on coaching and real-time problem solvingOwn shop workflow, ensuring efficient movement of assets from intake through return to serviceAssign and manage work orders, ensuring timely completion and accurate documentationMaintain 95%+ fleet uptime by proactively addressing issues and eliminating downtimeExecute preventative maintenance to achieve 100% complianceEnsure no asset remains idle in the shop for more than 48 hours without documented causeServe as final quality control checkpoint before any asset is returned to serviceMaintain accurate inventory of parts, tools, and consumables while preventing shortagesSource parts, manage vendors, and submit purchase order requests in alignment with company standardsMaintain a clean, safe, and highly organized shop environmentTake ownership of the internal customer (field crews and operations team), ensuring equipment is ready to perform at all timesProvide proactive and consistent communication on equipment status, repair timelines, and risksOperate with urgency and decisiveness to minimize downtime and accelerate repair turnaroundPerform DOT inspections as required, ensuring full compliance across the fleetProvide daily visibility to leadership on equipment status, downtime risks, and shop performanceHold technicians accountable to productivity, repair quality, and documentation standardsSupport seasonal readiness execution for both lawn and snow operationsSkills:Strong leadership and ability to lead by example in a hands-on environmentAdvanced mechanical, diagnostic, and troubleshooting skillsKnowledge of diesel, hydraulic, and electrical systemsStrong understanding of DOT compliance requirementsAbility to train and develop techniciansHighly organized with strong attention to detailAbility to manage shop workflow and prioritize effectivelyStrong communication and transparency with operations leadershipProcess-driven mindset with commitment to systems and executionEducation/Experience:5+ years of mechanical experience in fleet or equipment environmentsExperience leading or training technicians preferredDOT certification required or ability to obtain within 90 daysExperience sourcing parts and managing vendor relationshipsExperience scheduling and managing shop workflowFleet, construction, or landscaping equipment experience preferredCMMS or maintenance software experience preferredValid driver's license requiredCDL preferredWelding and fabrication experience preferredPhysical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 75 lbsAbility to stand for extended periodsAbility to work in both indoor and outdoor environmentsAbility to safely operate equipment and toolsAbility to work extended hours during peak seasonsOnce you apply, please text "SMLM" to 904-712-6140 for a faster reply.
