Head Cataloger - Library Support Services
The Head Cataloger serves as the senior subject matter expert in library cataloging and metadata management, supporting the National Defense University (NDU) Libraries. This role is responsible for leading cataloging operations, managing complex metadata environments, and supporting the migration and implementation of the Ex Libris ALMA / PrimoV / Digital Integrated Library System (ILS).The Head Cataloger plays a critical role in ensuring accurate organization, discoverability, and accessibility of both physical and digital collections, directly supporting NDU's mission to advance research, education, and national security strategy.Key ResponsibilitiesIntegrated Library System (ILS) Migration & ImplementationLead and support migration from legacy systems (e.g., SirsiDynix Symphony) to Ex Libris ALMA / PrimoV / DigitalCoordinate with internal stakeholders and external vendors to ensure successful implementationSupport configuration, troubleshooting, and post-migration system optimizationTrack and resolve migration-related issues and maintain documentationCataloging & Metadata ManagementPerform original cataloging in accordance with national standards (e.g., MARC 21, RDA)Create, edit, and maintain bibliographic and authority recordsAnalyze subject matter and assign appropriate classification, call numbers, and subject headingsEnsure consistency, accuracy, and discoverability across all catalog recordsCollections Maintenance (Physical & Digital)Maintain and enhance catalog records for:Physical collectionsDigital assetsSpecial collections and archivesPerform database clean-up, normalization, and deduplication of recordsEnsure compliance with metadata standards including:MARCDublin CoreEADVRAISO metadata standards Authority Control & Data IntegrityImplement and maintain authority control processes across all collectionsStandardize naming conventions, subject headings, and taxonomy structuresBuild and maintain indexing structures to improve search and retrievalEnsure high levels of data consistency across catalog systemsDigital Content & Knowledge ManagementSupport digital repository management and metadata creationAssist in managing digital archives, government documents, and special collectionsApply best practices in information architecture and data organizationSupport web-based library services and digital discovery toolsPerformance Monitoring & ReportingTrack cataloging output, accuracy, and system performance metricsPrepare and submit monthly status reports detailing:Records created/updatedIssues identified/resolvedSystem improvements and recommendationsSupport audits, quality checks, and compliance reviews Collaboration & Stakeholder SupportWork closely with:Library leadershipProject managersIT/system vendorsProvide subject matter expertise and recommendations on cataloging practicesParticipate in meetings and provide updates on progress and challengesRequirementsMaster's degree in Library Science (MLS/MLIS) from an ALA-accredited programMinimum 5+ years of experience in professional library catalogingStrong experience in:Original catalogingMetadata standards and schemaLibrary systems and database managementExperience in academic or special libraries strongly preferred Required Skills & ExpertiseDeep knowledge of:MARC 21, RDA, Dublin Core, EADAuthority control and taxonomy managementExperience with:Integrated Library Systems (ILS), preferably Ex Libris ALMA / PrimoOCLC cataloging toolsStrong analytical and data quality management skillsAbility to manage complex datasets and large-scale catalog systemsSalary Description
