Garfield, Midland, TXJob SummaryThe Biology Lab Instructor/Coordinator is a hybrid position that combines instructional duties with lab management responsibilities. This role is essential to supporting the biology department's instructional goals by ensuring efficient lab operations and expanding course offerings.The Lab Instructor/Coordinator will be responsible for teaching two Anatomy and Physiology labs (6 LEH), managing and preparing all biology labs for faculty (9 LEH), and maintaining compliance with safety regulations. Additional responsibilities include ordering supplies, maintaining equipment, and overseeing daily lab activities. The total instructional load is 15 LEH, with 10 required office hours per week each fall and spring semester.Required QualificationsBachelor's degree in biology or related field; relevant work experience may be substituted for educational requirementCommitment to student-centered learning and community engagementStrong organizational skills and attention to detailProficient computer skills; MS Word, Excel, presentation softwarePreferred QualificationsMaster's degree in biology or related fieldExperience teaching at the college level preferredFamiliarity with standard biology lab equipmentOne year of experience working with waste disposal and lab safety protocols.Experience using Canvas or similar LMSEssential FunctionsLab CoordinationPlan, implement, and coordinate the daily operations of the anatomy & physiology and introductory biology instructional labsSet up lab equipment, specimens, and materials in accordance with the course syllabiEnsure compliance with safety regulations and proper disposal of biological and chemical wasteCollaborate with faculty to align lab activities with learning outcomesProvide orientation to faculty, staff, and students in the use of the lab, equipment, and suppliesTrain and coordinate the activities of part-time laboratory staffMaintain the inventory of supplies, laboratory equipment, chemicals, and specimensEnsure equipment and instructional supplies are in good working order; may perform or oversee routine repairs and maintenanceDevelop budget recommendations and coordinate lab activities within the approved budgetInstructional DutiesTeach two lab sections of anatomy & physiology each fall and spring semesterAssist with the development and update of instructional materials, lab manuals, and assessmentsIntroduce, in the form of a lecture, new concepts not covered by a lecture instructorDevelop and administer test material for each labMaintain a grade book for lab grades and attendance recordsParticipate in community service activities and Midland College engagement activitiesContribute to additional responsibilities as needed to help advance Midland College's Vision, Mission, and Shared ValuesPhysical DemandsMust be able to bend, reach overhead, and lift/move equipment in excess of 25 poundsMust be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the timeAbility to move easily within the labThe person in this position frequently communicates with others verbally and electronically; must be able to exchange accurate informationSpecific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focusUse of manual dexterityAbility to stand or sit for long periods of timeJob is performed in a laboratory settingSecurity SensitivityAll Midland College positions are security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code §51.215, which authorizes the employer to obtain criminal history record information.
