Salary range:
The UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay at appointment. See the following table for the current salary scale for this position: https://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/_files/2025-26/represented-july-2025-scales/t15.pdf. Commensurate with college teaching experience, in accordance with the current Unit-18 lecturer salary scale and its provisions. A reasonable full-time salary range for this position is $70,977-$199,722. Starting salary is commensurate with highest degree and college level teaching experience.
Percent time:
Positions may range from 33% to 67% time, respectively equivalent to one or two courses per semester.
Anticipated start:
Academic year (AY) appointments start 7/1/2026; Fall semester appointments start 8/1/2026; Spring semester appointments start 1/1/2027. Summer 2026 (date depends on which summer session).
Review timeline:
Appointments for Fall and Spring semester are usually reviewed in April/May and Summer appointments are reviewed in October. Applicants are considered for positions as needs arise; the existence of this pool does not guarantee that a position is available.

Position description
The Department of Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley is generating an applicant pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach courses in Biological Anthropology and Anthropological Archaeology, should an opening arise. Applications will be accepted and reviewed according to department needs.
We are especially interested in Biological Anthropologists and Anthropological Archaeologists who can teach one or two undergraduate courses and/or a laboratory analysis class that satisfies our upper division course requirement, our geographic area course requirement, method course requirement in Biological Anthropology and Anthropological Archaeologists. We also welcome applicants with innovative approaches to any other field within Biological Anthropology and Anthropological Archaeology whose teaching might supplement current curriculum gaps in the department.
In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties may include holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g. syllabus), writing exams, and managing GSIs.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
A PhD (or equivalent international degree), or enrolled in PhD or equivalent international degree-granting program at the time of application.
Preferred qualifications
A PhD (or equivalent international degree) in Bioanthropology/Anthropology is preferred by the start date.
Prior teaching experience preferred.
