Our Annual Meeting is one of the largest medical gatherings in the U.S., drawing attendees from around the globe.Through education, advocacy, and practice management resources, the Academy supports ophthalmologists in delivering the highest quality patient care and building sustainable practices.Position SummaryThe Manager, Coding & Practice Strategy serves as one of the Academy's senior coding authorities and the organization's dedicated expert in retina coding, reimbursement, practice management and compliance. In this role, you will provide high-level advisory support to ophthalmologists and practice leaders, helping them navigate complex reimbursement structures, regulatory requirements, and payer policies that impact retina practices. You will lead the development of retina-specific coding education and resources that align with the Academy's gold standard for ophthalmic practice guidance, translating evolving regulations and payer rules into clear, practical strategies that support compliant documentation, protect revenue, and reduce operational risk. As a key subject-matter expert, you will contribute specialized retina expertise across the Academy's coding products, educational programs, and practice management initiatives, ensuring members have access to accurate, actionable guidance that supports the financial sustainability and operational effectiveness of ophthalmic practices. This role also supports the continued success of the Academy's ophthalmic practice product, representing more than $2 million in annual revenue while strengthening the organization's subspecialty coding expertise to ensure continuity of knowledge and reduce single-point-of-failure risk within the department. This is a remote position.Role and ResponsibilitiesCoding Products & Educational ContentLead the development and ongoing maintenance of coding, billing, reimbursement, compliance, and practice management products and resources.Serve as the subject-matter expert for retina coding across Academy and AAOE coding tools, reference materials, and digital resources.Identify emerging coding, reimbursement, and payer policy trends and translate them into new educational initiatives and product enhancements.Partner with internal teams to design and launch new educational programs and products supporting member practices.Ensure Academy coding resources remain accurate, timely, and aligned with evolving regulatory requirements.Ophthalmic Practice ConsultingProvide senior-level consulting to ophthalmologists, administrators, academic centers, private equity groups, and industry stakeholders.Conduct structured reviews of retina practice workflows, business operations, documentation, billing processes, and compliance risk areas.Deliver written consultative analyses outlining compliance risks, payer exposure, and financial impact.Advise practices on complex retina billing issues, including intravitreal injection drug billing, surgical coding, imaging utilization, modifier usage, and denial management strategies.Coding & Practice Management EducationServe as a senior instructor for Academy educational programs, including Codequest, webinars, national meetings, and specialty training events.Design and deliver advanced retina coding curricula addressing regulatory changes, payer policies, and documentation standards.Provide physician-focused education on audit readiness, documentation integrity, and compliant revenue optimization.Review participant feedback and continuously improve course quality and impact.Member Inquiry SupportRespond to member coding and reimbursement inquiries through Academy consultation channels and listservs.Interpret complex regulatory guidance and payer policies, translating them into practical recommendations for physicians and practice staff.Serve as an escalation resource for complex retina coding and compliance scenarios requiring advanced expertise.Health Policy & Advocacy CollaborationAct as a coding and reimbursement liaison to internal health policy and advocacy teams.Provide specialty-specific insights on the operational and financial impact of proposed regulations and payer policies.Collaborate across teams to ensure policy updates are accurately reflected in Academy coding resources, education, and communications.Qualifications, Skills, and Education RequirementsMinimum 10 years of experience in coding, billing, and revenue cycle management within a large ophthalmic practice or academic center.Minimum 5 years of leadership experience in a retina or high-volume ophthalmic subspecialty practice.Expert knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, HCPCS, modifiers, documentation standards, payer policies, and compliance requirements.Strong analytical and communication skills with the ability to translate complex regulatory guidance into practical guidance for physicians and administrators.Required certification: OCS and/or OCSR designation.Bachelor's degree in healthcare administration, business, health policy, or related field preferred; master's degree preferred or equivalent experience considered.TravelThis position requires occasional travel (approximately 20%) for events such as the Academy's Annual Meeting, Codequest courses, consulting engagements, and specialty society meetings.SalaryCompensation may vary based on geographic location, experience, and internal equity considerations.Equal Opportunity EmployerThe American Academy of Ophthalmology is committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and respectful workplace.
