Field Superintendent

Position: Field Superintendent Reports To: Project Manager Location: Field / Project Sites (Willing to Travel) Position SummaryThe Field Superintendent is responsible for overseeing all on-site construction activities to ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with project specifications and quality standards. This role serves as the primary field leader, coordinating crews, subcontractors, equipment, and materials while maintaining strong communication with project managers, engineers, and stakeholders. The Field Superintendent plays a critical role in driving productivity, enforcing safety, and ensuring successful project execution in the field. Key ResponsibilitiesField Operations ManagementOversee daily construction activities and site operations. Coordinate field crews, subcontractors, and equipment. Ensure work is performed according to project schedule and sequencing. Manage site logistics, material deliveries, and equipment utilization. Schedule & ProductionExecute the project schedule in coordination with the Project Manager. Monitor daily and weekly production goals. Identify and resolve delays or productivity issues. Adjust field operations to maintain schedule performance. Safety ManagementEnforce compliance with OSHA regulations and company safety policies. Conduct daily safety meetings and regular site inspections. Ensure all personnel follow safe work practices. Maintain a strong safety culture on all job sites. Quality ControlEnsure all work meets project specifications, plans, and industry standards. Identify and correct deficiencies in workmanship. Coordinate inspections and testing requirements. Maintain high standards of quality throughout project execution. Team LeadershipSupervise, lead, and motivate field crews and subcontractors. Foster a productive and accountable work environment. Resolve conflicts and maintain strong team communication. Train and mentor field personnel when needed. Coordination & CommunicationWork closely with Project Managers and Project Engineers to align field and office operations. Communicate project updates, challenges, and progress regularly. Coordinate with vendors, inspectors, and client representatives. Problem SolvingIdentify and resolve field issues including: Site conditions Equipment challenges Labor constraints Make real-time decisions to keep projects moving efficiently. Documentation & ReportingMaintain accurate daily reports, including: Labor hours Equipment usage Production quantities Site conditions Document delays, issues, and field changes. Support documentation for change orders and claims. Resource ManagementManage labor, materials, and equipment efficiently. Minimize waste and control costs in the field. Ensure proper allocation of resources to meet production goals. Client & Stakeholder InteractionServe as the primary on-site point of contact. Maintain professional relationships with clients and inspectors. Represent the company positively in the field. Qualifications57+ years of experience in heavy civil construction Minimum 3 years in a supervisory or superintendent role Strong knowledge of: Earthwork Utilities Concrete and paving operations Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications Familiarity with local and state standards (e.g., IDOT preferred) OSHA 30 certification required (or ability to obtain) Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills Experience with construction software (e.g., HCSS HeavyJob preferred) Key Success MetricsProject schedule adherence Field productivity and efficiency Safety performance and compliance Quality of completed work Crew performance and morale Accuracy of daily reporting Working ConditionsPrimarily field-based role on active construction sites Work performed in varying weather conditions Ability to walk job sites and lift up to 50 lbs as needed Flexibility to work extended hours, including evenings or weekends as required
