The unit comprises 17 beds, with a combination of inpatient and observation patients. The nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:4 during the day and 1:5 at night. Common diagnoses include urinary tract infections, altered mental status, pneumonia, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Nurses are not required to titrate drips; however, they may manage electrolyte and hypertensive medications as needed. A charge nurse is present on each shift and takes an assignment. There are nurse aids and patient care technicians on the unit, with specific ratios for day and night shifts. A pediatrician is on call for pediatric patients but is not onsite. Respiratory Therapy manages the use of BiPAP, while the nursing staff applies telemetry to patients. The unit uses ICU monitors, and nurses are expected to read the strips. Shifts are self-scheduled, with weekend work as needed. There is no holiday requirement. Floating to other departments may be required for specific patient needs. Scrub color is navy blue. Successful attributes for nurses include strong communication skills, motivation, approachability, teamwork, and the willingness to seek assistance when needed. Documentation can sometimes be complex. The organization maintains a radius rule of 50 miles for applicants. Requests for time off should be made upfront, with limitations on approved requests during the contract period. The charting system in use is MEDITECH.
