Director of Acquisitions (Sci Fi/Fantasy)

Leading publishing/media company is seeking a Director of Acquisitions focusing on science fiction and fantasy titles. Candidates must be based in the New York City area.Responsibilities:Acquire 200-300 high-demand sci fi/fantasy titles per year on favorable terms and within budget.Responsible for the P&L of each acquisition.Manage high-level relationships with publishers, literary agencies, and self-published authors.Maintain relationships with top authors in the space to ensure retention of talent.Identify, pursue, and manage strategic alliances with emerging content types.Educate internal marketing teams and external reselling partners on new title information and the successful positioning of the list in core markets.Leverage data analytics tools and performance metrics to support data-driven decisions and identify opportunities for growth in both publishing and category sales.Establish and enforce “house” boilerplates with each licensing partner.Qualifications:Minimum B.A. degree or equivalent.5-10 years of publishing experience in progressively more responsible positions.In-depth knowledge of the sci fi/fantasy book community, including trends, authors, events, etc.Must be self-directed with the ability to work both remotely and on-site.Ability to work cross-functionally with teams located around the world.Strong negotiation, leadership, and organizational skills.Demonstrated experience using data and analytical tools to inform decision-making and guide content acquisition strategy.Excellent communication – written and verbal – and public speaking skills.Experience and understanding of traditional publishing business models and new technology business models.Ability to travel 4-6 days per month, including local travel.
