Busser / Runner
Position Description
The primary responsibility of a Busser/Runner is to assist with the operations of the front and back of house. The Busser/Runner must reset tables in a speedy, professional, and effective manner as guests leave the restaurant; and to bring food and drinks out to customers once they have ordered. Bussers/Runners are also responsible for the grooming of the entire restaurant and its perimeters, supporting service staff with refills and clearing tables, and assisting in the fulfillment of various ticket items.
Major Areas of Responsibility
Resetting and cleaning around tables after customers leave the restaurant
Carrying dishes to and from the kitchen into the service area
Maintaining the overall cleanliness of the bakery
Assisting service staff with fulfilling orders
Managing tickets so as to ensure that all items in a customer’s order are served to them in a timely and courteous manner
Job Tasks
Obtain service area assignments at the beginning of each shift
Promptly greet guests with a smile as they enter the bakery and guide them to the ordering area
Quietly and promptly clean and sanitize tabletops, chairs, highchairs, and booths after guests leave
Take tableware to dishwashing station and place silverware, dishes, glassware, etc. in appropriate areas for washing
Assist in cleaning up spills
Constantly check the floor and clean as required
Reset and arrange tabletops
Inspect restrooms every 15 minutes, clean, and restock as needed
Respond appropriately to guest requests and either assist the guest or communicate the request to a service staff member immediately
Communicate with service staff members to assure efficient seating, table utilization, and customer service
Deliver food and drinks to tables, following all food safety guidelines
Restock dining area utensils, napkins, creamers, water pitcher, etc.
Smile and thank guests as they are leaving
Show flexibility in terms of your schedule to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the restaurant as directed by the manager or supervisor
Maintain a high level of personal cleanliness
Be a team player, always helping out fellow employees when possible
Maintain regular attendance or punctuality
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to remain calm in a busy and high-stress service environment
Excellent personal skills
Ability to multitask and have the ability to handle problems in an effective way while maintaining a professional demeanor
Ability to work as a team
Working knowledge of all menu items so as to assist customers with inquiries about the food they have ordered or will order
Food Handler’s Certification required, which can be obtained within the first 30 days of employment
Be able to communicate and understand English
Physical Requirements
Be able to fulfill physical requirements of a Busser/Runner’s job – carrying heavy trays (20 LBs at least) for long periods of time
Be able to work in a standing position for long periods of time
Work Environment
Loud, busy work environment with numerous people seated, standing, and moving around
Close working quarters in the service area
Frequent contact with hot plates and beverages and sharp equipment (knives) that may burn, scald, or cut if carried or used improperly
Schedule
Part time work, must be available to work weekends and holidays
