Steel Designer
About the RoleAs a VDC / BIM Steel Detailer (Steel Designer), you will translate structural design intent into highly constructible 3D models and fabrication-ready shop drawings for structural and miscellaneous steel systems. You’ll work closely with project managers, engineers, fabricators, and field teams to support coordination, prefabrication, and accurate installation across complex projects.This role is ideal for a detailer with strong Advance Steel expertise, a deep understanding of steel fabrication and erection, and a proven ability to deliver LOD 400 models and drawings in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.Key ResponsibilitiesDevelop fabrication-level (LOD 400) 3D models for structural steel and miscellaneous metals using Autodesk Advance SteelInterpret structural drawings, specifications, RFIs, and connection design criteriaApply company standards for modeling practices, naming conventions, and file organization within Autodesk Construction Cloud / BIM 360Produce fully annotated shop drawings, erection drawings, CNC files, and bills of material (BOMs)Detail bolted and welded steel connections, embeds, plates, supports, stairs, ladders, and handrailsSupport model coordination and clash detection with general contractors and other trades using federated modelsMaintain issue logs, viewpoints, and documentation of model decisions and revisionsRespond to RFIs, support change orders, and maintain as-built / record modelsPerform QA/QC checks on models and drawings, including connections, tolerances, camber, clearances, bolt patterns, and weld typesCoordinate with project managers, engineers, fabrication teams, and field leadership to align deliverables with project schedulesContribute to detailing standards, content libraries, and continuous improvement initiativesRequired Skills & Experience3–7+ years of structural steel detailing and/or steel design experience with a steel fabricator or structural contractorAdvanced proficiency in Autodesk Advance SteelDemonstrated experience producing LOD 400 fabrication-level models and shop drawingsStrong detailing background in:Structural steel framesComplex steel connectionsMiscellaneous metals (stairs, rails, ladders, embeds, plates)Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, specifications, and connection requirementsWorking knowledge of steel fabrication and erection processesExperience supporting RFIs, revisions, change orders, and as-built updatesHigh attention to detail with strong organization and communication skillsAbility to manage deadlines and collaborate across office, shop, and field teamsNice-to-Have Skills & ExperienceExperience detailing complex or non-standard steel connectionsFamiliarity with applicable codes and standards, including:AISC, AWS, ASTM, and local building codesExperience supporting large-scale projects such as data centers, industrial facilities, or semiconductor projectsFabrication shop or field erection experienceAbility to assist with material takeoffs, constructability reviews, or estimating supportExperience contributing to Advance Steel macros, templates, and detailing standardsTools You’ll UseAutodesk Advance Steel (primary detailing platform)Autodesk Revit (Structure)Navisworks and/or Revizto (coordination & clash detection)Autodesk Construction Cloud / BIM 360Bluebeam
