The Surgical First Assistant provides aid during surgical procedures to assist the surgeon in ensuring optimal results for patients. This role includes intraoperative duties as well as preoperative and postoperative responsibilities. The surgical assistant functions under the direction and supervision of the surgeon and must adhere to all hospital policies and regulations. The Surgical First Assistant will not take on any other role during procedures and will be listed as the first assistant on the perioperative record. Direct supervision from the surgeon means they remain scrubbed within the surgical field. Indirect supervision means the surgeon stays in the surgical suite but may not be scrubbed or within the immediate surgical field. Competencies for these skills will be evaluated annually with inputs from the surgeon as part of performance evaluations. Requirements include completion of a formal Surgical Assistant Certificate or Degree Program approved by relevant authorities. Hands-on training must encompass basic and advanced suturing, identifying anatomical structures, and techniques related to hemostasis and exposure. Two letters of recommendation from surgeons who have recently observed the assistant's professional behavior are necessary. Continuous education is encouraged to maintain current knowledge and skills.
