Retail Director

Job Title: Retail Director Reports To: VP of Residential Residential Development Summary: The Retail Director is responsible for the strategic leadership, operational performance, and profitability of two retail locations: the General Store and the Resort Gift Shop/Emerald Essentials. This role oversees all aspects of retail operations including financial management, merchandising, inventory control, team leadership, vendor partnerships, and customer experience. The General Store serves as a multi-function retail hub connected to a marina, offering retail merchandise, food and beverage items, and marine supplies. The Resort Gift Shop focuses on branded merchandise, souvenirs, and guest convenience products. The Retail Director ensures both locations operate efficiently, profitably, and aligned with brand standards and guest service expectations. Compensation**commensurate with experience Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Financial Management & ReportingDevelop and manage annual budgets, sales forecasts, and expense plans for both store locations. Monitor daily, weekly, and monthly sales performance, margins, labor costs, shrink, and profitability. Prepare financial and operational reports for ownership and executive leadership. Identify opportunities to increase revenue, improve margins, and reduce controllable expenses. Retail Operations LeadershipOversee day-to-day operations of the General Store and Resort Gift Shop to ensure smooth, efficient performance. Maintain high standards for cleanliness, organization, safety, and customer service. Ensure compliance with company policies, cash handling procedures, and operational controls. Lead multi-unit retail operations with a focus on consistency and accountability. Visual Merchandising & Brand PresentationDevelop and execute merchandising strategies that maximize sales and enhance the guest shopping experience. Ensure displays, signage, seasonal presentations, and promotional setups are visually compelling and brand appropriate. Adapt merchandising strategies for the distinct customer bases of the Marina General Store and Resort Gift Shop. Team Leadership & Talent ManagementRecruit, hire, train, coach, and develop store managers and retail team members. Build a high-performing culture centered on accountability, service, and results. Conduct performance reviews, succession planning, and employee development initiatives. Manage staffing schedules and labor productivity across both locations. Systems & Process ManagementMaintain expertise in Retail Pro or equivalent POS/retail management systems. Ensure accurate pricing, product setup, promotions, reporting, and inventory controls within retail systems. Develop and improve policies, procedures, and SOPs for all retail functions. Train teams on systems usage and operational best practices. Inventory Management / Buying / OrderingOversee inventory planning, purchasing, replenishment, and stock levels for all merchandise categories. Manage product assortments across food & beverages, marine supplies, apparel, gifts, souvenirs, and convenience items. Analyze sales trends and seasonality to optimize ordering decisions. Conduct regular inventory audits and implement shrink prevention strategies. Sales, Promotions & Product DevelopmentCreate and execute promotional calendars, seasonal campaigns, and sales-driving initiatives. Develop private-label, branded, or location-specific merchandise opportunities. Partner with marketing teams to drive traffic, guest engagement, and retail revenue. Introduce new products based on customer demand and market trends. Vendor Relationship ManagementBuild and maintain strong vendor partnerships for merchandise, food & beverage, and marine supply categories. Negotiate pricing, terms, freight, and promotional support. Support a positive workplace culture that shows up in our daily guest interactions. Education and ExperienceHigh school diploma or general education degree (GED). A minimum of 2-4 years' retail leadership experience preferred with direct leadership responsibilities. License Requirements Valid driver's license that has been in effect for at least three years, with no major violations and no more than two minor violations in the past three years. Work EnvironmentThe work environment is primarily office/store-based at the marina; however, it may require occasional outdoor work to greet customers at the dock or assist with boat preparation. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time frequently; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employee will walk and stoop, kneel, or crouch. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to lift 5-25 pounds regularly and over 25 with assistance, as needed, as part of the daily responsibilities.
