Branch Manager

About Shepherd Electric SupplySince 1892, Shepherd Electric Supply has been the first call when complex, time-critical electrical challenges need to be solved, and reliability truly matters. We move materials accurately and on time, so contractors stay on schedule, projects stay on track, and customers never have to wonder if we will come through. Our success comes from people who take pride in doing things the right way — safely, accurately, and with care for teammates and customers alike. If you want to do work that matters at a company that notices, this is the place. Why This Role MattersThe Frederick branch is a cornerstone of Shepherd’s Mid-Atlantic footprint — a market where our reputation was built and where it continues to grow. As Branch Manager, you are responsible for everything that happens under this roof: the people, the customers, the numbers, and the culture. This is a player/coach role. You are not managing from a distance — you are in the branch, working alongside your team, handling accounts, solving customer problems, and setting the standard by how you show up every day. At the same time, you are developing the people around you, building the systems that make the branch run, and ensuring Frederick performs at the level Shepherd’s customers expect. The Frederick team does not need a figurehead. They need a leader who earns trust by doing the work — someone who knows the customers by name, can step in when it’s needed, and holds the branch to a standard that does not slip when things get busy. How This Role Connects To Our CompassWe Keep Our Promises: Customers count on Frederick to deliver. You build schedules, manage inventory, and hold your team to commitments — and when something goes sideways, you own the resolution, not the excuse. We Stay Hungry: You are not running the same playbook forever. You are tracking performance, spotting gaps, developing your team, and looking for ways to serve customers better than you did last quarter. We Grow Together: Your success is your team’s success. You invest in your people, communicate across branches, and build the kind of branch that other Shepherd locations want to emulate. We Own It: The branch is yours. That means the wins and the problems. You do not pass the buck, wait for someone else to fix it, or let issues linger. You resolve them — and you make sure your team knows they can do the same.We Go Above & Beyond: Good enough is not the Frederick standard. You anticipate what customers need before they ask, develop your team before they plateau, and push the branch beyond what’s expected — not because it’s required, but because that’s who you are.Key OutcomesOrganized by what matters, not just what you do.Leading & Developing the TeamCoach your team daily — side-by-side, on the floor, not just in performance reviewsRecruit, onboard, and develop talent; build a bench so the branch is never dependent on one personSet clear expectations, give real-time feedback, and address performance issues directly and fairlyCreate an environment where people are proud to work, grow, and staySales & Customer RelationshipsMaintain and grow a personal book of accounts — you are a player, not just a managerProspect, qualify, and close new business while deepening relationships with existing customersCoach inside sales staff on quoting, follow-through, and customer service standardsEnsure every customer interaction — at the counter, on the phone, or in the field — reflects Shepherd’s commitment to reliabilityBranch Operations & PerformanceOwn the P&L: hit sales targets, manage gross margin, control expensesMaintain inventory accuracy and purchasing discipline; avoid dead stock and stockoutsEnsure the branch facility is clean, organized, and reflects the Shepherd standard at all timesCommunicate performance and goals to your team regularly — they should always know where they standCross-Branch & HQ CoordinationMaintain strong, two-way communication with regional leadership and HQCollaborate with other branches on transfers, staffing, and shared customer needsRepresent Frederick’s interests while staying aligned with Shepherd’s broader directionWhat Success Looks LikeAfter 90 days, you and your manager should both be able to point to these markers:You know your customers by name — and they know they can count on you personallyThe team knows what good looks like and is performing to itSales activity is tracked, goals are visible, and the branch is trending in the right directionInventory is accurate and the facility is consistently clean and organizedYou have identified at least one person on your team to develop into a leadership roleBranch issues are resolved at the branch — escalation to regional leadership is the exception, not the normRegional leadership trusts that Frederick runs correctly when they are not watchingWho Thrives HereThis role is a strong fit if:You lead from the front — you do not ask your team to do anything you would not do yourselfYou are energized by both selling and coaching, and you do not see them as competing demandsYou hold your people accountable with directness and care — not avoidance, not harshnessYou communicate proactively: with customers, with your team, and with regional leadership — not after problems surfaceYou take the long view on talent — developing people matters as much to you as hitting the numberYou thrive in an environment that rewards ownership, not just activityQualifications & RequirementsHigh school diploma or equivalent required; college degree preferred3–5 years of management experience in distribution, wholesale, or a related industry preferredElectrical product knowledge is a strong plus; willingness to learn is non-negotiableDemonstrated track record in sales — building relationships, growing accounts, closing businessStrong verbal and written communication skills; comfortable with difficult conversationsProficient in Microsoft Excel and Outlook; familiarity with distribution software a plusOnsite presence required; this is not a hybrid roleAbility to successfully complete pre-employment screening requirementsWhy Join Shepherd Electric SupplyCompetitive pay with opportunity tied to branch performanceMedical, dental, and life insurancePrescription drug coveragePaid vacation and personal time401(k) with employer match130+ years of industry leadership — and we’re still growingA culture where reliability is noticed, ownership is rewarded, and people come firstA company scaling into new markets — with real paths to grow with itCompensation Details: The expected starting rate of pay for this position is $100,000 annually, depending on experience.
